Original job description

About the role IBT is hiring a Senior Electrical Engineer to own the electrical design of our products: the controllers, electrodes and batteries behind EMG-based control of upper-limb prostheses, used by over 6,000 people in 46 countries, and new wearable sensing products we're developing from the ground up. Location: Baltimore, MD, full-time on-site Reports to: Chief Executive Officer Works with: our firmware engineer, mechanical engineer, systems engineering, quality and production We want a hands-on, hardware-first technical lead who works well with others. You will own the electrical architecture of our products, from power and sensing to the hardware-firmware interface, working within the system architecture set by systems engineering. You will take designs from concept and simulation to released, manufacturable boards, and trace faults across circuits, firmware, cables and the third-party devices our system connects to. The role leans toward hardware, with enough embedded depth to shape the firmware architecture alongside our firmware team, and it uses AI coding tools to speed up development and validation. ## What you will work on Next-generation controller hardware, including power architecture and connectivity Battery charging and battery-management circuitry Multi-channel biopotential (EMG) acquisition hardware A new wearable sensing product, from prototype to verified device: high-density sensor arrays and a low-power electronics module We share project details with finalists under a confidentiality agreement. ## Responsibilities ### Hardware design and architecture Own the electrical architecture and design of IBT products (controllers, electrodes, batteries and wearable sensing systems), within the system architecture and requirements set by systems engineering Take new products from proof-of-concept prototypes to verified devices: design selection, design reviews and multi-unit verification Design schematics and high-density PCB layouts in Altium for small, mixed-signal, battery-powered boards Design power management for battery-powered wearable electronics, including battery charging and management, and protection for external interfaces (ESD, reverse polarity, short circuits, hot-swap) Design ultra-low-power wearable electronics: power budgets, sleep and wake strategies, onboard data logging and Bluetooth Low Energy Design low-noise sensor front ends, from multi-channel biopotential (EMG) to high-density sensor arrays, and digital communication interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, Bluetooth module) Simulate circuits and confirm results on the bench Select components, manage obsolescence and qualify replacements ### Embedded systems development Define the hardware and firmware interface, and review firmware that touches hardware: drivers, interrupts, timing, power states, bootloader and field updates Work in C/C++ and Rust at the hardware-firmware boundary on STM32 (ARM Cortex-M) microcontrollers: board bring-up, drivers for connected devices, bootloaders, power management and sensor bring-up Use AI coding tools (for example Claude Code) to speed up firmware development, test creation and validation, with an engineer reviewing and verifying every AI-generated change before it's merged, and help build shared practices for AI-assisted development and review across the team Build test benches and scripts that automate characterization and regression testing Review firmware changes before merge, and run formal verification protocols with the quality team ### Test, characterization and investigation Characterize new hardware: power-rail behavior, startup and transients, noise, thermal and battery behavior Characterize and calibrate sensors across units: sensitivity, linearity, hysteresis and drift Run in-office pre-compliance testing (for example emissions screening, ESD and charging bench tests) ahead of externa lab testing led by systems engineering Characterize third-party devices that connect to our system (batteries, hands, wrists and elbows) and docume
