Original job description

Position Overview This is a defining moment in our organization’s history. As we lay the groundwork for an upcoming capital campaign, we are seeking an Annual Fund Manager who will strengthen the foundation every great campaign is built on: a broad, loyal, and growing community of donors who give year after year. This is more than a fundraising role. It’s an opportunity to own and shape the annual giving program of an organization on the cusp of its next great chapter. The Annual Fund Manager will lead our annual giving strategy across direct mail, digital, monthly giving, and workplace giving, while managing a portfolio of donors and identifying those ready to deepen their support. If you are energized by a big vision, motivated by results you can measure, and ready to help grow sustainable support for animals, we want to hear from you.

What You’ll Do Annual Fund Strategy and Campaigns

  • Lead the planning, execution, and evaluation of our annual fund, setting goals that grow operating revenue, donor participation, and retention.
  • Use donor history, engagement, and giving behavior to shape strategy, and refine campaigns based on results.
  • Grow participation in matching gift, workplace giving, and employer-supported giving programs.
  • Ensure annual fund strategy supports our broader fundraising goals and donor pipeline development.

Monthly Giving and Donor Retention

  • Lead the growth of our monthly giving program, from acquiring new recurring donors to re-engaging lapsed ones.
  • Design, implement, and maintain a structured welcome and onboarding experience that turns first-time donors into long-term supporters.
  • Create stewardship strategies, including personalized gratitude, impact reporting, and recognition, that keep donors engaged and giving.
  • Monitor monthly donor revenue performance and collaborate with the Development and Marketing teams to adjust strategies as needed to meet goals.

Direct Mail and Digital Fundraising

  • Lead annual appeal strategy across print and digital channels, directing messaging, timing, audience selection, and execution in partnership with Marketing, Communications, Development staff, and external vendors.
  • Ensure every campaign tells an integrated, donor-centered story of impact that reflects our organizational priorities.
  • Review campaign materials for accuracy and consistency before launch.
  • Track campaign performance and adjust strategy to improve response rates, donor participation, retention, and revenue.

Portfolio Management and Pipeline Development

  • Manage and own a portfolio of annual fund donors through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Identify donors with the interest and capacity to increase their support, partnering with the Major Gifts Officer and Chief Development Officer to advance them into mid-level and major giving.
  • Sustain regular and appropriate donor contact through phone calls, email, meetings, events, personalized communications, and other engagement opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate donor records and campaign data in the CRM.

Annual Fund Program Development

  • Serve as a key strategic partner in building and strengthening our annual giving program.
  • Partner with the Chief Development Officer to set revenue projections and annual fund goals and track progress.
  • Meet or exceed annual fundraising goals, with an initial target of approximately $1M in annual fund revenue during the first year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, marketing, or a related field.
  • 3 to 5+ years of annual giving or individual giving experience, with a proven record of growing donor retention, recurring revenue, and campaign results.
  • Hands-on experience planning and executing multichannel appeals, including direct mail and digital, and managing fundraising vendors.
  • Experience personally managing a donor portfolio and moving donors to higher levels of giving.
  • A strategic, analytical thinker who uses donor data and campaign metrics to make decisions.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including appeal letters, donor emails, and stewardship communications.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems (experience with Bloomerang and DonorSearch a plus), plus strong organizational skills for managing multiple campaigns and deadlines.
  • Experience in animal welfare or community-focused organizations preferred.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend events, and passion for our mission.

Why This Role, Why Now Every transformational gift starts with a donor who gave for the first time. This is a chance to own and grow the program that builds those relationships, at a pivotal time for our organization, alongside a passionate team that believes in the power of every donor to change lives. If you want your work to make a lasting difference for animals, our community, and the organization’s next chapter, this opportunity could be for you!
