Original job description

Impinj delivers the Physical Intelligence that connects the physical world to the AI-powered digital world, fueling automated workflows and improving consumer experiences. From retail merchandise and groceries to packages and shipping pallets, Impinj products and solutions identify and track tens of billions of everyday items, providing real-time operational insights about every item enterprises make, move and sell. We are, quite literally, the eyes and ears of smart enterprise systems. Come help us build technology and solutions that enable businesses to visualize everything, waste nothing and act instantly.

Team Overview:

Impinj is seeking a Senior Staff Software/DevOps Engineer specializing in cloud infrastructure and reliability to join our Solutions Software organization to design, build, and operate the cloud platform that manages our RFID readers at scale. In this position, you will work hands-on across application code and infrastructure, in close collaboration with the senior engineers on the team, to scale, harden, and monitor a platform that serves very large reader fleets.

We’re building a high-caliber software team from the ground up with uncompromising standards for quality, velocity, and close, cross-functional collaboration. You’ll work across the full technology stack (frontend, backend, mobile, databases, event sourcing, MQTT, PKI/certificates, IoT) alongside collaborators from diverse disciplines including design, firmware, and silicon.

What You Will Do:

Design and build infrastructure that scales automatically to handle connection surges of up to a million RFID readers
Design for resilience to cloud regional outages, including multi-region deployment, failover, and disaster recovery
Write production code in Rust and TypeScript for backend services, APIs, and data pipelines
Profile and resolve performance, scalability, and reliability issues across the system
Build and maintain infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, secrets and certificate management, deployment, and environment management
Build monitoring, alerting, logging, and reporting for production systems, and handle incident response
Build and operate event-driven systems using event sourcing, message queues, and MQTT
Drive technical strategy for infrastructure and present proposals to engineering, product, and executive leadership
Take primary ownership of infrastructure and operations, partnering with senior engineers who build and ship alongside you
Lead cross-functional technical initiatives with engineering, product, and other Impinj teams where our platform intersects with theirs
Establish engineering best practices and patterns that increase team velocity and ensure long-term scalability
Mentor and coach engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and technical guidance
Lead the team’s adoption of AI tools and practices for building, testing, and operating software

What You Will Bring:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
Typically requires 12+ years of professional software development experience
Experience developing production application code as well as designing and operating cloud infrastructure
Deep expertise in cloud platforms, containers and orchestration, infrastructure as code, networking, security, and observability
Strong understanding of scaling, load management, consistency, and failure modes in distributed systems
Proven track record of building and operating systems at scale, with detailed examples of problems you solved
Demonstrated history of delivering results on new, ambiguous, or difficult technical problems
Demonstrated history of increasing technical scope and influence, including mentoring engineers and leading initiatives across teams
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a record of helping teammates succeed
Demonstrated use of AI tools to improve the speed and quality of engineering work
Experience with Azure, event sourcing, IoT device fleets, or embedded software preferred
Deep expertise in Rust preferred
