Original job description
Controller, Oil & Gas Investment Firm Houston, TX | Onsite, five days a week About the company Our client is a private investment firm in Houston focused on long-term investment in the global oil and gas industry. It acquires operated and non-operated interests in producing, development and exploration assets, along with technologies that improve production. The portfolio spans multiple legal entities across the Americas and internationally, and the business is growing quickly, with plans to roughly double in size over the next few years. The opportunity This is a newly created role to lead the firm’s in-house accounting function, as accounting moves from an outsourced model to a team built internally. You’ll own the close, reporting, controls and audit across a multi-entity, multi-jurisdiction portfolio, and you’ll have a real hand in shaping how the function runs, including how it uses systems, automation and AI. You’ll report to the CFO, an experienced oil and gas finance leader who has built finance teams from scratch before, and you’ll build and lead a team of three. This is a great fit for someone ready to step into their first Controller role, or a seasoned Controller who wants to build something, and who’s happy to grow their scope as the company grows. What you’ll do Close, controls and audit
- Own the monthly close and deliver accurate, on-time financials, continually improving the process.
- Own the general ledger, consolidations, intercompany activity and account reconciliations across all entities.
- Build and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies and close discipline, including payment and cash disbursement controls alongside Treasury.
- Serve as the primary contact for external auditors and manage the annual audit across jurisdictions.
Financial reporting
- Deliver financial statements under US GAAP for US entities and IFRS for international entities.
- Manage accounting for international entities, including multi-currency transactions, remeasurement and translation, and support local statutory reporting with in-country teams and advisors.
Oil and gas accounting
- Oversee revenue and joint venture accounting, primarily for non-operated interests, including working interest, royalty and ORRI revenue and severance and production taxes.
- Oversee review of joint interest billings against JOA and COPAS terms, and reconciliation of operator statements, cash calls, prepayments and suspense.
- Oversee DD&A, depletion, ARO and impairment, and review lease operating statements for reasonableness and cost control.
Systems, AI and automation
- Act as system administrator for the firm’s oil and gas accounting platform, Quorum ODA, including integrations, upgrades, data integrity and monthly data transfers from international systems.
- Champion the use of AI and automation across the function, from close and reconciliations to reporting and exception handling, and evaluate new tools for practical use.
- Build and maintain advanced Excel models for reconciliation, cash flow and reporting.
Leadership and partnership
- Hire, develop and lead a team of two Accounting Analysts and a Staff Accountant.
- Work closely with the investment team, operations, treasury, engineers and finance leadership on budgeting, forecasting and analysis.
What we’re looking for
- Active CPA license.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with increasing scope and leadership responsibility.
- Upstream oil and gas accounting experience, with non-operated working interest accounting strongly preferred. Offshore experience is a plus.
- Hands-on ownership of the close, internal controls and the external audit.
- Strong systems skills.
- Hands-on use of AI tools, automation or agentic workflows in an accounting or finance setting.
- Advanced Excel skills.
- A self-starter who’s comfortable on a small team and enjoys working across the business rather than staying behind a desk.
Nice to have
- Big 4 public accounting background, ideally serving energy clients.
- US GAAP and IFRS reporting experience.
- International, multi-entity and multi-currency consolidation experience.
- Experience in an investment manager or fund environment.
- Experience leading an accounting system implementation or conversion.
- MBA.
Compensation
Competitive base salary plus a 15% annual bonus and an excellent benefits package.
