Original job description

About WarehouseOS WarehouseOS is the warehouse management system fulfillment teams run their day on. It’s the software floor staff hold in their hands for an entire shift, and what warehouse managers rely on to plan, monitor, and improve operations. Our customers range from fast-growing brands to established third-party logistics providers moving thousands of orders a day. We build software for real-world warehouse environments where reliability, clarity, and speed matter. WarehouseOS is part of a broader software strategy at Hoj Innovations, a company with more than six decades of experience designing, installing, and optimizing warehouse operations. Across more than 100,000 completed projects, Hoj has developed deep operational expertise in a category increasingly shaped by software. WarehouseOS is the starting point for building software capabilities that can serve the company’s wider portfolio over time. We are looking for people who want to help shape that future. About the role We are hiring our first Staff Software Engineer to lead WarehouseOS workstreams, from clarifying ambiguous problems through rollout and production follow-through. You will report directly to the Director of Software Engineering, who also leads product direction, and partner with our Principal Technical Program Manager on sequencing, dependencies, and coordination across workstreams. We are deliberately moving more technical decision-making from the Director into the engineering team. You’ll make technical calls without routine sign-off. When a decision would shift priorities, commitments, or spend, you’ll bring in the people who own those. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role. You will write production code while leading technical work, reviewing changes, and helping other engineers grow. The balance will shift with the work. The role is based in Salt Lake City, Utah and requires a full-time in-office presence. The salary range is $145,000–$180,000, depending on experience and qualifications. The work ahead The work spans an established product, modernization of older systems, and new capabilities. Our .NET services support warehouse order flow, device traffic from the floor, and integrations with customer and partner systems. The challenges include developing a sustainable approach to retaining and accessing growing volumes of historical warehouse data, evolving existing systems without disrupting warehouse operations, and making production easier to understand and support. These problems require investigation and judgment, not a predetermined architecture or a mandate to rewrite everything.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead engineering workstreams, taking ownership of technical delivery, rollout readiness, and production follow-through.
  • Make and document technical decisions about implementation approaches, component boundaries, data models, APIs, and testing strategies. Revisit tradeoffs when evidence or requirements change.
  • Break work into pieces other engineers can own, provide context for them to make decisions, and help resolve technical obstacles.
  • Partner with the Director on customer needs, scope, priorities, and risk, and with the Principal Technical Program Manager on sequencing and cross-workstream dependencies.
  • Share code-review responsibility, mentor engineers through review and pairing, and establish review practices proportionate to the risk of a change.
  • Build and evolve production services with attention to data integrity, reliability, maintainability, and performance under real warehouse load.
  • Improve observability, runbooks, release practices, and incident response, and address technical debt where it meaningfully reduces risk or enables delivery.

What success looks like in your first six months Working with the Director and the team, you will establish priorities and aim to:

  • Lead a workstream from design through production, with clear tradeoffs, meaningful ownership by other engineers, and a supported rollout.
  • Establish a practical design-review approach that enables more engineers to make sound decisions independently.
  • Identify and improve a specific reliability or delivery problem with the team, establishing a baseline and demonstrating the improvement.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Has 8+ years of professional software development experience, including multiple projects led from design through production.
  • Has designed, shipped, and operated production systems, and can explain the alternatives considered, the tradeoffs made, and what happened after release.
  • Has deep experience with C# and ASP.NET Core, or a comparable modern backend stack with the ability to come up to speed quickly.
  • Can turn an incompletely defined problem into a practical technical approach, accounting for scope, risk, dependencies, and the realities of an existing system.
  • Understands relational data deeply and can reason about integrity, consistency, and performance under real load.
  • Writes clearly and helps other engineers grow through design discussions, documentation, code review, and pairing.
  • Disagrees constructively, seeks relevant expertise, and changes course when better evidence or reasoning emerges.
  • Has used modern delivery and observability tooling to improve how a team builds and operates software, not just to complete individual tasks.
  • Is comfortable in a growing organization where some systems and practices are established and others still need to be built.

Even better if you:

  • Have experience in warehouse management, logistics, supply chain, fulfillment, industrial automation, or other operations-heavy software.
  • Have built or operated integrations with hardware, scanners, mobile devices, or customer and vendor systems.
  • Have worked with microservice or event-driven architectures and understand where they help and where they add unnecessary complexity.
  • Have experience running software on Linux in production, including containers and cloud infrastructure.
  • Have led incident reviews or improved on-call practices to reduce recurring operational problems.
  • Use AI development tools thoughtfully to improve productivity while maintaining quality and accountability.

Benefits and perks

  • Flex PTO
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage, including mental health support, medical advice line access, flexible spending accounts, and parental leave
  • Disability and life insurance options
  • Employer dollar match to HSA and 401(k)
  • Team-building events and monthly catered office lunches

Optional: share a technical decision If you’d like, include a few paragraphs about a technical decision where there was meaningful disagreement or where you changed your mind. Describe the options, how you reached a decision, how you worked with others, and what you learned from the outcome. An anonymized example is welcome. Please do not include confidential information from a current or former employer.
