Original job description

Position Summary The Project Manager - Utility Solar supports the Senior Project Manager in the day-to-day commercial and administrative management of one or more utility-scale solar (and where applicable, BESS) construction projects. This role executes the risk management, change management, contract/deliverable tracking, and reporting processes established by the Senior Project Manager, and serves as a key coordination point between field leadership, engineering/procurement, and project controls. This is a hands-on execution role and a development track toward Senior Project Manager.

Key Responsibilities

Risk Management

  • Maintain and update the project risk register under direction of the Senior Project Manager, including tracking status, mitigation actions, and owners for identified risks.
  • Monitor field, procurement, and schedule activity for emerging risks (delays, supply chain, subcontractor performance, interconnection issues) and report them promptly to the Senior Project Manager.
  • Support risk review meetings by preparing data, updates, and documentation.
  • Track and follow up on assigned risk mitigation action items to closure.

Change Management

  • Prepare, log, and track change order documentation (scope description, pricing backup, schedule impact) for review and approval by the Senior Project Manager.
  • Maintain the project change log, ensuring accurate status (submitted, pending, approved, rejected) and running totals.
  • Draft notice letters and change requests per contract requirements, for Senior Project Manager review prior to submission.
  • Coordinate with field leadership and subcontractors to gather backup documentation supporting change orders and claims.

Contract & Deliverable Management

  • Track contractual deliverables (submittals, schedules, permits, insurance/bonding certificates, interconnection milestones, closeout documents) and maintain the deliverable log/tracker.
  • Follow up with internal teams and subcontractors to ensure deliverables are submitted on time; escalate delays to the Senior Project Manager.
  • Assist in reviewing subcontracts and purchase orders for scope, schedule, and compliance alignment with the prime contract.
  • Support subcontractor billing/pay application review and compliance documentation (insurance, lien waivers, etc.).

Reporting

  • Prepare regular (weekly/monthly) project status report inputs for review by the Senior Project Manager prior to distribution.
  • Maintain schedule, cost, and milestone tracking data in project management systems.
  • Support preparation of client/owner-facing reports and internal leadership dashboards.
  • Assist with cost-to-complete and forecast data gathering in coordination with project controls/accounting.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Coordinate with field leadership (Area/Senior/Assistant Superintendents, Foremen) to align project execution with schedule, budget, and contractual requirements.
  • Liaise with procurement, engineering, and commissioning teams to track material and equipment deliveries against project milestones.
  • Support the Senior Project Manager in coordination with the Electrical Manager on technical scope and procurement issues, and with the Project Executive on client/owner matters as directed.

Team Support

  • Supervise and mentor Project Engineers and Project Coordinators assigned to the project.
  • Review and quality-check subordinate work products (submittal logs, RFIs, tracking sheets) before submission to the Senior Project Manager.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 4–6+ years of project management/project engineering experience in construction, with experience in utility-scale solar (or comparable large-scale EPC/energy infrastructure) projects preferred.
  • Working knowledge of construction contract structures, change order processes, and deliverable tracking.
  • Experience maintaining risk registers, logs, or trackers on active construction projects.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through on documentation.
  • Proficiency with project management and reporting tools (Procore, MS Project, Primavera, or similar) and Microsoft Excel/PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects.
  • Exposure to projects using both union and non-union labor.
  • PMP certification (or in progress).
  • Familiarity with interconnection/utility coordination processes.
