Original job description
Harton is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with 4-7 years experience in mechanical design to contribute to the development of our novel bioprocessing platform. In this role, you will support the planning, design, prototyping, integration, and testing of complex electromechanical subsystems, collaborating closely with small multidisciplinary science and engineering teams throughout the development process.
The ideal candidate will bring strong mechanical design intuition, hands-on experience with electromechanical systems, and a passion for developing innovative technologies that enable manufacturing of next-generation cell-based products.
Responsibilities
- Support the design, prototyping, integration, and qualification of automated cell growth and characterization instruments in collaboration with cross-functional engineering and biology teams.
- Design, prototype, and test electromechanical subsystems meeting technical and performance requirements from concept through release.
- Propose and execute data-driven improvements based upon instrument performance and validation testing.
- Manage relationships with domestic and international suppliers for custom and off-the-shelf components.
- Participate in project planning and scheduling under the direction of technical team leads.
Required Qualifications
- BS or MS in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or related field, with approximately 4-7 years of experience in complex electromechanical product development.
- High proficiency in 3D CAD and experience collaborating on a hardware product. Harton uses Onshape for 3D CAD.
- Proficiency using AI tools to support routine engineering tasks.
- Experience in rapid prototyping, low- and high-volume manufacturing technologies, and domestic and international supplier relations.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain engineering concepts and workflows to non-engineering colleagues and commercial teams.
- Excellent engineering judgment with the ability to independently evaluate technical trade-offs, cost, risk, and schedule when making decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in electronics design and assembly, actuators, motion control, and sensors. Hobby, industrial, and robust theory are all acceptable.
- Proficiency in EDA software, signal analysis, and communication protocols.
- A portfolio illustrating the design and fabrication of personal projects that may highlight technical problem solving, diverse interests or experiences, and the ability to document and share complex work. Candidates should include a link to their portfolio within their resume.
- Familiarity with thermal and fluid flow simulation as applied to mechanical system design.
- Understanding of cell expansion and fundamental bioprocessing concepts.
- Familiarity with the U.S. technology patent process.
- Experience in optics, microscopy, fluidics, materials science, or the practical intersections of these disciplines.
