Original job description
Entry-Level Project Engineer – New Mexico
Position: Project Engineer I (Entry Level)
Location: New Mexico (in-state candidates)
Are you a recent engineering graduate who wants to see real solar and battery storage projects go from design to energized? Gridworks is hiring an entry-level Project Engineer in New Mexico to support our growing pipeline of utility-scale projects across the state.
You'll work alongside experienced project managers, engineers, construction managers and field teams, learning how large-scale renewable projects are engineered, built and handed over. We'll give you hands-on exposure from day one, and the mentorship to grow into a full Project Engineer role.
About Gridworks
Established in 2014, Gridworks is a leading EPC contractor for utility-scale solar and battery storage projects. We operate primarily across the Southwest and are expanding into new regions. With 2 GW of solar and battery energy storage projects, we are well positioned for continued growth in the clean energy sector, and New Mexico is a key part of that growth.
What you'll do
With guidance from the Engineering Project Manager and senior engineers, you'll support projects from concept through construction and closeout.
Engineering coordination
- Help coordinate with internal and third-party engineers of record to keep design deliverables on track for budget, schedule and client requirements
- Learn how engineering connects to safety, quality, estimating, procurement, warranty and other internal teams
- Build your understanding of EPC contracts and subcontracts, and how they shape day-to-day project decisions
- Collaborate across the organization and with external partners in line with Gridworks values
Design development
- Perform quantity takeoffs on electrical, civil and structural designs and compare them to budget
- Help communicate design intent to clients and relay client and project team feedback to design engineers
- Contribute ideas to value engineering efforts
- Learn construction means and methods and take part in constructability reviews of designs
Document control in Procore
- Use Procore to manage project documents (we'll train you)
- Create, track and transmit submittals to clients and engineers of record
- File project documentation and archive previous design versions on time
- Track document revisions and help maintain document control
Construction support
- Draft and help coordinate responses to construction RFIs
- Support commissioning, testing and closeout activities
Learning and continuous improvement
- Stay current on trends, technologies and best practices in solar, storage and electrical engineering
- Bring a fresh perspective and suggest ways to make our engineering processes more efficient
Qualifications
Requirements:
- B.S. degree in engineering (electrical, civil, structural or mechanical) or construction management, ABET accreditation preferred
- Equivalent hands-on technical experience may be considered in place of a degree
- 0–2 years of experience; internships and co-ops count
- Foundational knowledge of electrical, structural or civil principles, components and systems through coursework, internships or projects
- Computer skills: Microsoft Office (especially Excel), PDF viewing and editing, basic CAD
- Based in New Mexico, or able to relocate before your start date
Preferred Requirements:
- Internship or co-op experience in construction, utilities, energy or engineering
- Coursework or a senior design project related to solar, battery storage or power systems
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Interest in coordinating across multiple engineering disciplines and companies
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Basic understanding of project schedules, with eagerness to learn critical path scheduling
- Passed the FE exam or working toward EIT certification
- Exposure to Procore, AutoCAD, Bluebeam or similar tools
