Original job description

Supervisor, Buildings & Grounds

We're looking for a dedicated and experienced Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds to lead the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Great Lakes Energy's facilities and properties. In this role, you'll ensure our buildings, grounds, and supporting equipment, effectively support our employees, members, and operations while maintaining a safe, efficient, and compliant work environment. You'll lead facility maintenance initiatives, drive strategic improvements, manage vendor relationships, and guide a skilled team focused on operational excellence.

Who We Are

For over 85 years, Great Lakes Energy has powered rural communities across 26 counties in western and northern Michigan. As the third-largest Michigan-based electric utility and the state's largest member-owned power company, we serve over 128,000 meters with pride. Beyond delivering reliable electricity, we are leaders in advanced fiber technology through Truestream, our communication solutions subsidiary.

At Great Lakes Energy, we prioritize enriching the lives of our community members and employees. With over 300 team members, we're more than just colleagues-we're a close-knit family, united by a shared vision of growth, innovation, and community service.

A Day in the Life of a Supervisor, Buildings & Grounds

As the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds, your day may begin by reviewing facility priorities, maintenance schedules, and ongoing improvement projects across Great Lakes Energy properties. You'll coordinate work assignments, support your Facilities Maintenance Technicians, and ensure equipment, tools, and resources are available to keep operations running smoothly.

Throughout the day, you'll oversee preventative maintenance programs, evaluate facility conditions, and collaborate with internal stakeholders on building/property upgrades and operational needs. You may meet with contractors, vendors, and service providers to discuss projects, review budgets, and ensure quality standards are being met.

You'll also work closely with safety, human resources, and security teams to ensure facilities remain compliant with regulations and company standards. Whether conducting inspections, planning future capital improvements, tracking asset performance, or responding to facility-related issues, you'll play a key role in creating a productive and safe workplace.

Before the day ends, you may spend time reviewing budgets, evaluating process improvements, updating project plans, and identifying opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and asset longevity.

Who You Are

You're a proactive leader who enjoys balancing strategic planning with hands-on problem solving. You understand that well-maintained facilities are critical to business success and take pride in ensuring buildings, grounds, and infrastructure are safe, efficient, and reliable.

You excel at building relationships and collaborating with employees, contractors, vendors, and leadership teams. Your strong organizational skills allow you to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail. You're always looking for ways to improve processes, reduce operational disruptions, and maximize the value of facility assets.

You lead with accountability, support employee development, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and shared knowledge. Whether managing a maintenance project, overseeing compliance requirements, or evaluating facility upgrades, you're focused on delivering results while supporting Great Lakes Energy's mission and values.

What You Bring

Experience and Education: Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management or a related field, along with at least three years of facilities management or related experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Technical Knowledge: Experience with facilities operations, capital improvement projects over 10 million USD, maintenance programs, regulatory compliance, process improvement methodologies, inventory practices, and facility-related equipment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office/365 and other position-specific software applications.
Certifications and Licenses: Valid Michigan driver's license with a driving record that meets company standards. Certification in forklift and aerial lift operation, or the ability to obtain and maintain certifications.
Leadership Skills: One or more years of supervisory experience leading and developing teams preferred.

We have a number of benefits, both traditional and progressive, to support you and your family through life's various stages. Here's just a taste of what we have to offer:

The Essentials - We cover the cost of comprehensive health insurance. You'll be hard-pressed to find better for you and your family...seriously!

Better Health Through Better Living- Healthy employees are happy employees. Our diverse wellness program supports your physical, financial, and mental well-being.
When Life Hands You Lemons - We know life doesn't always go as planned. That's why we offer life insurance, as well as short- and long-term disability insurance-fully paid by GLE to provide peace of mind when the unexpected happens.
More Time with Your Baby-New parents get time off to bond with their new bundle of joy. Parental leave benefits provide two weeks of family-friendly paid leave for moms and dads to bond and care for their growing families. Growing your family through adoption? You're awesome! We may be able to help you with related expenses up to $2,000.
Never Stop Learning - We hire talented people for a reason, and we want you to stick around. That's why we invest in your training and development. Whether it's advancing your education, learning new skills, or job shadowing another role, we're here to support your career growth.
Riding Off Into the Sunset- Your future is important to us, and we've got the numbers to back it up. We offer two retirement savings plans for eligible employees-a traditional pension and a 401(k) option. Our participation rates are through the roof!
