Original job description
Manager – Goldfish Swim School Needham
Read this first. This job isn't for everyone, and that's on purpose.
At Goldfish Swim School, we can teach you pool chemistry, scheduling software, and our operating procedures. We can't teach you to care. We hire for character first and train for skill. So before you look at the duties, see whether this sounds like you.
You'll thrive here if you:
• Get energy from people, especially kids and the teens on your team. You'd rather spend your shift on the pool deck coaching a new instructor than behind a desk.
• Want feedback and give it well. You ask "how could I have handled that better?" and mean it. You can have a direct conversation with a team member and still leave them feeling supported.
• Own problems instead of passing them along. A sub calls out, a parent is upset, and the pool chemistry is off, all before 10 a.m. You stay calm, sort out what matters most, and fix it.
• Treat safety as non-negotiable. You notice the small things and hold the standard every time, even on the days nobody's watching.
• Make work fun on purpose! Shout-outs, team events, and celebrating wins are part of how you lead, not extras.
This probably isn't the right fit if you:
- Want a predictable, behind-the-scenes management role.
- Feel uncomfortable in 90-degree heat, humidity and a noisy, busy building.
- Would rather point out a problem than jump in and fix it.
- Don't want to work weekends or the evening hours when families swim.
- See coaching and developing young employees as a chore rather than the best part of the job.
Why people stay:
We change lives, help kids reach their goals and wear flip-flops to work. We're a fast-growing, award-winning franchise, so managers who live our culture have real room to advance. We reward hard work with recognition, bonus opportunities and a team that has your back.
Benefits: paid time off, paid national holidays, health insurance, bonus opportunities, and a diverse and inclusive workplace.
What you'll need (the teachable part):
- High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Experience as a certified lifeguard, youth sports instructor or coach, camp counselor, and/or childcare provider required.
- Two or more years of management experience preferred; two or more years as a swim instructor preferred.
- Must pass background examinations (included with training).
- Must be able to read, understand and communicate in English at a conversational level.
Reports to: General Manager | FLSA Status: Exempt, Non-Exempt Work environment: Regular exposure to heat and humidity; noise level usually moderate.
Does the "thrive" list sound like you, and did the "not a fit" list make you laugh instead of wince? Then we want to meet you.
