Controller

Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church

$100,000–$115,000 per year

Denver metropolitan area | Primarily remote with designated in-office days

Bring your accounting expertise to work that supports congregations and communities across the Mountain West. Mountain Sky Conference seeks a Controller who combines sound financial judgment with a collaborative approach and a commitment to responsible stewardship.

About Mountain Sky

Mountain Sky is the regional organization of The United Methodist Church serving Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and a small part of Idaho. Across roughly 460,000 square miles, we support 305 churches and nearly 45,000 members through local congregations, clergy support, leadership development, and shared ministries.

Our 29-person team includes colleagues who work remotely. Our Conference office is south of the Denver metropolitan area. We value inclusivity, accountability, collaboration, transparency, bridging differences, and honoring diverse voices.

The opportunity

Working closely with the Conference Treasurer, you will oversee day-to-day accounting operations and assigned staff, deliver accurate and timely financial information, and help strengthen the processes that protect the Conference’s resources. Your work will help ministry leaders make informed decisions and sustain trust with the communities we serve.

What you will do

  • Lead accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, incoming funds, disbursements, credit card transactions, and employee expense reports.
  • Manage payroll processing and reconciliation, apply payroll regulations, and prepare payroll and investment entries under the Treasurer’s supervision.
  • Complete monthly closes within established deadlines; reconcile balance sheet accounts and maintain accurate records of designated and restricted funds, including gift balances and rollforwards.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, supplemental reports, regulatory reports, and audit documentation. Coordinate distribution to leaders and stakeholders and posting of public financial reports to the Conference website.
  • Partner with the Treasurer and Responsible Stewardship Committee to improve accounting practices, internal controls, and standard financial reports that support accountability and transparency.
  • Coordinate the annual independent audit under the Treasurer’s supervision and in consultation with the Council on Finance and Administration; lead internal preparation and support.
  • Support annual budget development, gather budget data, and assist the Treasurer with finalization and accurate entry into the accounting system.
  • Assist the Treasurer with financial management of grants received and requested, strategic planning, and other responsible stewardship initiatives.
  • Provide guidance to local churches on accounting, financial reporting, and recommended controls and procedures. Lead and supervise assigned staff and complete other duties assigned by the Treasurer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting and at least five years of experience in a Controller role, specifically in nonprofit or church accounting.
  • At least three years of experience in a Controller role or a comparable accounting leadership position, preferably within a nonprofit or church organization.
  • Experience with fund accounting, nonprofit financial reporting requirements, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), along with a strong understanding of payroll regulations.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and the ability to extract and analyze data from accounting systems and other databases to create useful reports.
  • The ability to work independently, set priorities, meet deadlines, and collaborate with colleagues and ministry leaders while upholding the Conference’s values.

Preferred qualifications

CPA credential; an advanced degree; experience with Financial Edge and other accounting and reporting platforms; and familiarity with the structure and governance of The United Methodist Church.

Compensation and benefits

Annual salary of $100,000–$115,000, plus health, welfare, and retirement benefits. Benefits also include 13 paid holidays and generous paid time off for vacation and sick leave.

Location and schedule

This position is based in the Denver metropolitan area and is primarily remote, with attendance at the Conference office required on designated days. Occasional travel is expected.

Closing Date: December 2, 2026
