Job Summary:
General Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development ranging from the nuclear fuel cycle to remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.
The Core Services IT department at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility is seeking an early career Cybersecurity Analyst to support the operational security and compliance of our Department of Energy (DOE) funded research networks. This role is critical for establishing a formal separation of duties between cybersecurity policy oversight and technical execution. Reporting directly to the IT Service Manager, this position will focus on continuous monitoring, incident response, and the technical implementation of security controls across the highly segmented Fusion and IFT networks.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Continuous Monitoring & Incident Response: Actively monitor network traffic across the Science DMZ and 100Gbps ESnet pipeline. Serve as the first line of defense for triaging and responding to security alerts and incidents.
- Firewall & Network Security Support: Assist in the configuration, tuning, and daily management of dedicated network security hardware, including FortiGate firewalls, to protect specialized Operational Technology (OT) and enterprise IT environments.
- Vulnerability Management: Execute routine vulnerability scans, assist in threat hunting exercises, and coordinate automated patch deployments across the research infrastructure to meet stringent deployment SLAs.
- Compliance Implementation: Work alongside the Information Systems Security Manager (ISSM) to implement technical controls that align with NIST SP 800-53 and NIST SP 800-82 guidelines, ensuring audit readiness and compliance with DOE Order 205.1C.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate logs, incident reports, and system configuration documentation to support ongoing Zero Trust governance and compliance audits.
We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a bachelors degree in a related discipline and two or more years of progressive experience in computer system security or related field. Equivalent professional experience may be substituted in lieu of education.
- Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in IT operations, network administration, or a dedicated cybersecurity support role.
- Foundational understanding of network architecture, firewalls, and segmentation principles.
- Familiarity with standard cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, CIS) and vulnerability scanning tools.
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a specialized research environment. Preferred Qualifications.
- Baseline security certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CySA+, or equivalent).
- Prior exposure to Operational Technology (OT) or Industrial Control Systems (ICS) security.
- Experience with Fortinet/FortiGate ecosystems.
Work Environment: This role requires a hands-on presence to support physical networking hardware, isolated control systems, and real-time reactor operations. Therefore, this is categorized strictly as a full-time, on-site position at the DIII-D facility in San Diego.
