The Position Scientist II

The Opportunity

As a Scientist II in the Small Molecule Biomarkers (Metabolomics & Lipidomics) team within our Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) department, you will play a key role in advancing safe and effective therapeutics for patients. Joining Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED), you will empower drug discovery across the organization by executing high-throughput mass spectrometry workflows and applying modern tools - including Generative AI - to drive biological insights.

This position is based in South San Francisco, on site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Experimental Execution: Routinely perform onsite lab-based LC-MS workflow methods to acquire high-quality mass spectrometry biomarker data supporting target biology evaluation, drug discovery and development.
  • Automation: Use liquid handling automation to execute automated sample preparation workflows, including protein precipitation, liquid-liquid and solid-phase extraction, and chemical derivatization. Prepare and execute global and targeted metabolomics and lipidomics protocols across diverse biological specimens, including biofluids, tissues, and cells.
  • Data & AI Workflows: Execute mass spectrometry data processing and statistical analysis leveraging in-house AI/ML workflows and commercial software tools to scale analysis and reporting.
  • Quality & Insight: Oversee rigorous bioanalytical quality control using common industry practices and critical analytical reasoning. Organize and document accurate experimental records following the guidance of lead scientists to support the timely delivery of high-quality data and study reports.
  • Support routine lab operations including instrument maintenance, consumable and chemical management, and compliance with lab safety and quality standards.

Who You Are You are an innovative analytical Lab scientist with a passion for biochemistry, cellular metabolism, small molecule biomarkers, mass spectrometry technology, and emerging computational tools. You thrive in collaborative, high-impact environments and want to translate cutting-edge omics data into life-changing medicines.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education & Industry Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biological, chemical, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related field, accompanied by at least 5 years ( Bachelor’s) or at least 3 years (Master’s) of direct experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Bioanalytical Expertise: Proven experience in executing LCMS assays for endogenous small molecule metabolites or lipids, including sample preparation techniques like protein precipitation, liquid-liquid, or solid-phase extraction.
  • Technical Mastery: Practical experience operating and troubleshooting modern LC-MS platforms (e.g., UHPLC, triple quadrupole, high-resolution mass spectrometers) and using analytical data processing software.
  • Metabolic & Computational Insight: Solid foundation in biochemistry, cellular metabolism, coupled with hands-on experience or strong aptitude using Generative AI tools for coding
  • Collaboration & Communication: Excellent communication skills with a proven track record of working effectively in multidisciplinary project teams.
