Job Description:
Virtualization Engineer GDIT is seeking a Virtualization Architect for the Federal Civilian Division to join our outstanding team! You will support a large-scale, global Data Center and Cloud Services contract supporting the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Technology (DT). You will architect, design, and optimize virtual infrastructure platforms across enterprise hybrid environments, ensuring mission uptime, scalability, performance, and security. Responsibilities include advanced architecture development, engineering governance, modernization planning, lifecycle management, automation, monitoring, and integration activities across domestic and international DT managed sites.
HOW A VIRTUALIZATION ENGINEER WILL MAKE AN IMPACT
Architecture & Engineering Leadership:
- Architect and validate enterprise virtualization solutions across VMware vSphere/ESXi/vCenter/vSAN, Microsoft Hyper‑V/SCVMM, Windows Failover Clustering, Azure Stack HCI, and Linux/KVM-based platforms.
- Develop virtualization roadmaps and modernization strategies that incorporate cross-platform migrations, interoperability, and workload placement optimization.
- Create HLD/LLD designs spanning compute, storage, network, and cloud integrations for multi‑hypervisor environments.
- Provide architectural oversight for enterprise environments supporting more than 1,500 virtual machines across VMware, Hyper‑V, and KVM clusters.
- Evaluate and implement virtualization technology enhancements including Azure HCI, VMware Cloud on AWS, and container‑native virtualization (KubeVirt/OpenShift Virtualization) when appropriate.
Operations Architecture & Service Delivery:
- Support 24x7x365 operations across virtualization platforms, ensuring consistency in configuration baselines, patching, lifecycle management, and performance tuning.
- Guide engineering teams in troubleshooting and operationalizing complex virtualization environments involving VMware, Hyper‑V, and Linux/KVM systems.
- Lead hypervisor migration initiatives, cluster consolidations, and cross‑platform workload transitions.
Monitoring, Observability & Reporting:
- Integrate platform monitoring tools (vROps, SCVMM, Prometheus, hyperscaler monitoring tools) into DT observability frameworks.
- Provide capacity planning and forecasting across all virtualization stacks, including hybrid cloud compute footprints.
Security, Compliance & Risk Management:
- Ensure virtualization architectures align with DT security policy, FedRAMP, NIST RMF, STIGs, Zero Trust principles, and platform-specific security models.
- Implement RBAC, segmentation, encryption, secure boot, and compliance controls across VMware, Hyper‑V, and KVM systems.
Financial, Capacity & Resource Stewardship:
- Support capacity planning, utilization modeling, and forecasting for DT’s multi-site virtualization footprint.
- Provide architectural recommendations for modernization investments, hardware refresh cycles, and licensing requirements.
- Contribute to resource optimization, VM rightsizing, and engineering decisions aligned with sustainability goals.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration:
- Collaborate with DT service providers, engineering teams, cyber stakeholders, and operations staff to standardize virtualization practices.
- Produce engineering documentation, diagrams, SOPs, runbooks, and knowledge-transfer materials.
- Lead engineering pilots, platform evaluations, and introduction of new virtualization technologies.
