Original job description

Project Engineer – Civil/Site Hackettstown, NJ, US French & Parrello Associates (FPA) is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Civil/Site Department in Hackettstown, NJ. This is an exciting opportunity for a civil engineering professional to assume greater technical and project responsibility, contribute to land development and infrastructure projects from design through construction, and build a long-term career with one of the Northeast’s fastest-growing engineering consulting firms. Recognized year after year as one of NJBIZ’s Best Places to Work in New Jersey, FPA is committed to creating a culture where talented professionals are empowered to grow, collaborate, and succeed. In 2026, FPA was ranked #49 on Zweig’s Hot Firm List, recognizing the firm among the 100 fastest-growing AEC firms in the United States and Canada. Our continued growth is driven by our investment in our people, technical excellence, and commitment to delivering innovative solutions for the communities we serve. The successful candidate will have experience developing civil/site designs and preparing engineering calculations, construction documents, technical reports, and permit applications. As part of multidisciplinary project teams, this individual will oversee design work, coordinate with clients and project stakeholders, and help guide projects through all stages. This role offers the opportunity to expand technical expertise and judgment while taking greater ownership of project coordination and deliverables. Working closely with Project Managers, the Project Engineer will support project schedules and budgets, mentor junior staff, and participate in meetings with clients, municipalities, and regulatory agencies. Civil/Site Engineering & Project Experience FPA’s Civil/Site Department provides comprehensive design and permitting services for land development and infrastructure projects, including grading, drainage, stormwater management, utilities, roadway improvements, and erosion and sediment control. The Project Engineer will lead assigned technical work, coordinate designs across disciplines, and guide projects through permitting, agency review, approvals, and construction. This role provides the opportunity to manage increasingly complex assignments, address design and field conditions, and develop the technical and project management experience needed to advance within FPA.

Responsibilities

Prepare and oversee the design and development of civil/site engineering plans, including grading, drainage, stormwater management, utility infrastructure, roadway improvements, and erosion and sediment control measures.
Perform and review engineering calculations related to site design, stormwater management, hydrology, hydraulics, and utility systems.
Prepare construction documents, technical specifications, engineering reports, and permit applications.
Coordinate project design efforts with project managers, clients, architects, municipalities, and other engineering disciplines.
Review and interpret survey data, environmental constraints, zoning ordinances, and land development regulations.
Support and participate in meetings with clients, municipal agencies, planning boards, and regulatory authorities.
Assist with project scheduling, budgeting, and resource coordination.
Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and design staff.
Conduct site visits and construction observations to evaluate project progress and address field conditions.
Ensure project designs comply with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, permitting requirements, and engineering standards.
Assist in preparing responses to agency review comments and securing project approvals.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of New Jersey required.
Minimum of 4 years of experience in civil/site engineering and land development design.
Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D required.
Strong understanding of New Jersey land development regulations, permitting processes, and agency requirements.
Experience preparing site plans, grading plans, utility plans, and stormwater management reports.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational and project management abilities with the capacity to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
Experience working in a multidisciplinary consulting engineering environment preferred.
Familiarity with municipal, commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional land development projects.

Your experience may be exactly what we need for this role or another opportunity within our growing team. The FPA Difference Large firms offer scale. FPA offers opportunity. For more than 50 years, French & Parrello Associates (FPA) has been delivering innovative engineering solutions that shape communities, improve infrastructure, and support regional growth. As an employee-owned, mid-sized engineering and consulting firm, FPA combines the technical capabilities and expertise of a larger organization with the collaboration, accessibility, and personal investment of a close-knit team. At FPA, engineers are empowered to take ownership of their work, collaborate across disciplines, and experience the full project lifecycle. Your career is not defined by one task or limited to one area of expertise. Instead, you will have the opportunity to strengthen your technical skills, work alongside experienced professionals, contribute to meaningful infrastructure projects, and develop the experience needed to grow into future engineering leadership roles. Our multidisciplinary approach allows team members to see the bigger picture, collaborate with experts across multiple disciplines, and understand how their work impacts the communities we serve. We invest in our people through mentorship, professional development, and opportunities for advancement because we believe the success of our employees drives the continued success of our firm.
