Construction Inspector Hackettstown, NJ, US French & Parrello Associates (FPA) is seeking a Construction Inspector to join our Construction Engineering Department in Hackettstown, NJ. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced construction professional to support land development and municipal infrastructure projects by monitoring field activities, documenting progress, and helping ensure work is completed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, permits, and applicable standards. Recognized year after year as one of NJBIZ’s Best Places to Work in New Jersey, FPA is committed to creating a culture where talented professionals are empowered to grow, collaborate, and succeed. In 2026, FPA was ranked #49 on Zweig’s Hot Firm List, recognizing the firm among the 100 fastest-growing AEC firms in the United States and Canada. Our continued growth is driven by our investment in our people, technical excellence, and commitment to delivering innovative solutions for the communities we serve. The ideal candidate will bring strong knowledge of construction methods and field practices, careful attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with contractors, clients, agencies, and project teams. This individual will help maintain project quality and accountability through accurate observations, thorough documentation, and timely communication. Construction Inspection & Field Experience FPA’s Construction Engineering Department supports land development and municipal infrastructure projects throughout New Jersey, providing inspection services for site development, roadway, utility, and stormwater infrastructure improvements. The role offers exposure to a diverse range of projects throughout New Jersey.

Responsibilities

Observe and inspect construction activities for land development and municipal infrastructure projects, including site grading, roadway improvements, water distribution systems, sanitary sewer systems, and stormwater management facilities.
Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, local regulations, and applicable engineering standards.
Prepare detailed daily inspection reports documenting construction activities, site conditions, installed quantities, workforce/equipment on site, and overall project progress.
Track and verify installed quantities to support payment applications, cost tracking, and project documentation.
Capture and maintain photographic documentation of construction progress, milestones, and field conditions.
Serve as a field liaison between contractors, municipal clients, utility agencies, and the design team to support communication and resolve field issues.
Attend construction progress meetings and provide updates on work status, schedule adherence, and field challenges.
Verify materials, equipment, and workmanship meet project specifications, quality standards, and contract requirements.
Assist with review of shop drawings, RFIs, and change orders as directed by project engineers or managers.
Monitor project schedules and proactively communicate potential delays or impacts to project management.
Ensure compliance with safety standards and report unsafe conditions or practices observed in the field.
Coordinate with utility companies, municipalities, and other stakeholders during active construction operations.
Support project closeout activities, including punch list development, final walkthroughs, and as-built documentation.

Qualifications

3 + years of experience in construction inspection or observation, preferably on land development and/or municipal infrastructure projects.
Working knowledge of construction methods, materials, and field installation practices for utilities, roads, and site development.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with field reporting or construction management software.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple project sites as required.

For more than 50 years, French & Parrello Associates (FPA) has been delivering innovative engineering solutions that shape communities, improve infrastructure, and support regional growth. As an employee-owned, mid-sized engineering and consulting firm, FPA combines the technical capabilities and expertise of a larger organization with the collaboration, accessibility, and personal investment of a close-knit team. At FPA, engineers are empowered to take ownership of their work, collaborate across disciplines, and experience the full project lifecycle. Your career is not defined by one task or limited to one area of expertise.
