Original job description

Are you ready to build America’s energy future? Form Energy is an American manufacturing and energy technology company. We’re revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day technology designed to keep the electric grid secure and reliable, even during extended periods of stress. By strengthening the electric system and reimagining what’s possible, we’re giving clean energy a whole new form!

In recent years, Form Energy has earned a number of accolades, including being named by TIME as a “Best Invention”, MIT Technology Review as a “Top Climate Tech Company To Watch”, and Fast Company as “One of the Next Big Things In Tech”. We are making rapid progress on our mission of delivering energy storage for a better world, and our team is growing just as rapidly to meet demand. We have signed contracts with leading electric utilities across the United States and production of our iron-air batteries is underway at our first high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia.

Working for Form Energy is more than just a job, it’s a chance to be part of something extraordinary. And now - right as we significantly scale up battery manufacturing - might be the most exciting moment in the company’s history to join. We are assembling a team of highly talented and driven individuals across the country. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, our team is determined to deliver on our mission and transform the energy landscape for the better.

Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you’ve come to the right place.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Form's Advanced Product Development team is responsible for architecting and designing the next generation of our iron-air battery system - the cell, module, pack, and the support systems that keep them running reliably for decades in the field. We work ahead of our production programs, translating breakthrough electrochemistry and system requirements into electrical, controls, and test systems that can scale to high-volume manufacturing.

We're hiring an Electrical Engineer II to design, build, troubleshoot, and test the control systems and test assets that support development of our next generation of iron-air batteries. As part of our Advanced Product Development team in Somerville, MA, you will spend much of your time in the lab: wiring and commissioning control systems, bringing up new hardware, diagnosing electrical and controls faults, and running system-level tests. You will work with guidance from senior electrical engineers and alongside mechanical and systems engineers and technicians to turn test requirements into safe, reliable, well-documented hardware. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver our sustainable multi-day energy storage solution to the grid!

Relocation assistance is available.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Design, build, wire, and check out control systems for test assets, working from schematics and BOMs through fabrication and documentation.
Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues on test assets and prototype hardware, finding root causes with scopes, meters, and data logs and implementing fixes.
Bring up and commission new test assets in the lab, including point-to-point checkout, sensor and instrument verification, and functional testing of safety interlocks.
Plan and run system-level tests: write test procedures, collect and review data, and report results and issues to the team.
Program and modify PLC and HMI logic for test assets with guidance from senior engineers, and keep eCAD schematics, BOMs, and cable/harness documentation current.
Partner with mechanical, systems, and test engineers and technicians on tight timelines, and champion lab and electrical safety when introducing new processes, prototype hardware, or test methods.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 1+ years experience in control panel design, PLC programming, or test/automation equipment, or Master's with research or professional engineering experience.
Experience with PLC programming (e.g., Beckhoff TwinCAT, Allen-Bradley, or similar) and HMI development, including debugging logic on live hardware.
Ability to read and work from electrical schematics; experience with an eCAD package (AutoCAD Electrical, ePLAN, or SolidWorks Electrical) is a plus.
Hands-on lab skills: panel wiring, troubleshooting with scopes and meters, commissioning hardware, and planning and running system-level tests.
Familiarity with NFPA 70/79 and UL 508A practices for industrial control panels.
Exposure to sensors, data acquisition, power distribution, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., EtherCAT, Modbus, CAN).
Experience in energy storage, batteries, or another safety-critical hardware industry is a plus.

Humanity is a cornerstone of Form Energy’s culture, and we make sure our compensation and benefits reflect that. Form Energy offers competitive salaries, stock options, and a holistic benefits package to ensure all employees have what they need to thrive while working here.

When it comes to you and your family’s health, we cover 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums for full-time employees - and 80% of healthcare premiums for dependents. This starts from day one. We also offer at least 12 weeks of paid leave for new parents (up to 20 weeks for birthing parents), and generous vacation policies to give employees time to recharge when needed.

To build America’s energy future, we need everyone at the table. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply to our open jobs.

If you may require reasonable accommodations to participate in our interview process, please contact accommodations@formenergy.com. Requests for accommodations will be treated with discretion.

Form Energy is committed to maintaining the privacy of our applicants. Please be aware that we will never solicit sensitive personal information such as Social Security numbers or bank account details during the recruiting or hiring process.
