Original job description

In this position ... As part of our Quality team, good is never good enough. Ford Quality drives the continuous improvement efforts that enable Ford to deliver the highest quality products and services. In this individual contributor role, you will work within Ford's Powertrain Engineering organization as a hands-on quality engineer. You will work closely with Product Development, Manufacturing and Service teams to help make sure our V6 and V8 engine and exhaust systems are designed robustly. You will check the data and evidence behind engineering sign-offs, analyze failures, and help teams close gaps. You will use Ford's Global Product Development System and Quality Operating System to support successful New Model Launches, and you will contribute to reliability targets and quality standards for future programs. What you'll do ...

  • Check engineering deliverables for V6/V8 engine and exhaust systems. Confirm that the test evidence in FEDE meets the requirement and/or design rule.
  • Perform Change Point Analysis (CPA) with functional teams. Make sure changes to usage, noise factors or system boundaries are covered in the application test plan.
  • Work with technical leads on CPAs across engine and exhaust systems, including FEAD, Lubrication, Cylinder Heads, Blocks, Pistons, Valvetrain, Timing, Engine Cooling and Exhaust.
  • Use the "three-legged five-why" method to define the specific, detection and systemic root causes of DV and field failures.
  • Support engine and exhaust teams in migrating their DFMEAs to the model-based systems engineering platform.
  • Verify that program requirements apply to the target program.
  • Use the enhanced Reliability Check List to assess whether program design verification plans meet reliability targets.
  • Review designs, requirements and test plans to identify gaps. Work with technical specialists to update DFMEAs, test methods and design rules using Robustness Checklists (RCLs).
  • Work with Program Quality and functional quality teams to help set quality and reliability targets for future programs.
  • Participate in plant audits to confirm that on-the-floor control plans adhere to the approved engineering drawings and specifications.

You'll have...

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in powertrain/engine or exhaust design, development, or test
  • Knowledge of Failure Mode Avoidance (FMA): DFMEA, P-Diagram, Quality History, Boundary Diagram, Interface Analysis and Functional Analysis
  • Strong analytical and data-driven problem-solving skills, including the "three-legged five-why" methodology
  • Experience with reliability methods
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams

Even better, you may have...

  • Master's degree in Engineering
  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification
  • Understanding of engine and exhaust architecture and of internal and external system interfaces
  • Experience with advanced engine technologies (e.g., turbocharging, direct injection, hybrid systems)
  • Experience with automotive quality systems (e.g., APQP, PPAP)
  • Experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools
