Job Description Summary:

Role Summary The Design & Delivery Engineer is a senior technical individual contributor within Infrastructure Operations & Architecture (IO&A), reporting to the Director, Technology Architecture, Design & Delivery. This role is responsible for designing, engineering, implementing, and transitioning infrastructure solutions that align with approved enterprise architecture standards, service portfolio strategies, cybersecurity requirements, and operational support expectations. The Design & Delivery Engineer serves as the primary technical delivery resource for infrastructure initiatives across domains including network, cloud, systems, identity, infrastructure protection, monitoring, storage, backup, database, and related technology platforms. The role partners closely with Service Portfolio Architects, Service Delivery Managers, project teams, vendors, and Managed Services Partners to ensure solutions are designed, implemented, documented, transferred, and operationally supported in a sustainable and supportable manner.

Where established service standards, reference architectures, or approved patterns do not exist, the Design & Delivery Engineer collaborates with the appropriate Service Portfolio Architect and architecture stakeholders to develop and document new standards and design guidance. The role is accountable for ensuring solutions satisfy operational readiness requirements and successfully transition into steady-state support through structured hypercare, knowledge transfer, and support enablement activities.

Job Description:

Purpose Design, engineer, implement, and transition secure, resilient, scalable, standards-aligned infrastructure solutions that accelerate business outcomes while ensuring operational readiness, supportability, and long-term sustainability.

Mission

Enable IO&A to deliver technology capabilities efficiently and consistently by translating architecture standards and service requirements into production-ready solutions that are engineered for reliability, operational support, lifecycle sustainability, and successful adoption by Technology Operations and Managed Services Partners.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Design and Engineer Infrastructure Solutions · Design and implement infrastructure solutions aligned to approved architecture standards, service portfolio guidance, cybersecurity expectations, and operational support requirements. · Produce detailed technical designs, build specifications, implementation plans, validation procedures, and deployment documentation. · Ensure solutions are scalable, resilient, recoverable, supportable, and aligned with enterprise technology strategy. · Participate in design reviews, architecture governance activities, and operational readiness assessments throughout the solution lifecycle.
  2. Develop and Maintain Technical Standards and Design Patterns · Apply approved service standards, architectural patterns, reference designs, and technology governance requirements to all engineering and delivery activities. · Collaborate with Service Portfolio Architects and architecture stakeholders to define new standards, patterns, and technical guidance when existing standards do not adequately address business or technology requirements. · Contribute implementation knowledge, lessons learned, and engineering best practices to the architecture repository and standards library. · Ensure delivered solutions remain aligned to approved architectural direction and portfolio roadmaps.
  3. Lead Technical Delivery and Implementation Activities · Serve as the technical lead for infrastructure solution delivery efforts across assigned initiatives. · Coordinate technical implementation activities among vendors, delivery partners, project teams, and internal stakeholders. · Develop implementation sequencing, validation procedures, cutover plans, rollback strategies, and deployment schedules. · Ensure design decisions, technical assumptions, dependencies, risks, and constraints are documented and communicated throughout delivery activities.
  4. Partner with External Vendors and Delivery Partners · Collaborate extensively with implementation partners, technology vendors, consulting organizations, and Managed Services Partners to define solution scope and delivery expectations. · Review statements of work, technical proposals, designs, engineering plans, and implementation approaches for alignment with FFP standards and operational requirements. · Establish clear technical acceptance criteria, engineering expectations, and delivery requirements for partner-led work. · Validate partner-delivered solutions meet approved architecture, design, supportability, and operational-readiness expectations.
  5. Collaborate with Service Delivery Managers on Operational Readiness · Partner closely with Service Delivery Managers throughout solution delivery to ensure operational requirements are identified and addressed early in the design process. · Provide input to the SDMs as they ensure monitoring, alerting, runbooks, escalation procedures, support documentation, access requirements, recovery procedures, and operational controls are defined prior to production deployment. · Participate in operational-readiness reviews, service acceptance activities, and production-support planning. · Ensure solutions meet the minimum operational support thresholds established by IO&A before support transition.
  6. Lead Hypercare, Support Transition, and Knowledge Transfer · Coordinate structured hypercare activities following major deployments, platform introductions, migrations, or significant technology changes. · Monitor solution stabilization activities and ensure support teams receive timely resolution of post-implementation issues. · Develop and deliver knowledge-transfer sessions, operational documentation, support procedures, and technical training materials for Service Delivery Managers and Managed Services Partners. · Validate support teams have the knowledge, documentation, tools, and operational awareness necessary to successfully assume ongoing support responsibilities.
  7. Support Major Incident and Service Recovery Activities · Serve as a senior technical resource during critical incidents, service disruptions, escalations, and major outage situations involving delivered technologies and solutions. · Provide consultative engineering guidance to Service Delivery Managers, Managed Services Partners, Technology Operations, and leadership during restoration and recovery activities. · Participate in root-cause analysis efforts, corrective action planning, and service improvement initiatives stemming from major incidents. · Ensure lessons learned are incorporated into designs, standards, operational procedures, and future implementation activities.
  8. Deliver Small-Scale Infrastructure Projects · Independently manage and execute smaller infrastructure initiatives that do not require partner-led project management or formal delivery services. · Develop implementation plans, coordinate stakeholders, track tasks, manage delivery risks, and ensure successful completion of project objectives. · Maintain delivery transparency through appropriate documentation, milestone tracking, and stakeholder communication. · Ensure project outcomes align with architecture standards, operational support requirements, and business expectations.
  9. Maintain Engineering Documentation and Delivery Artifacts · Develop and maintain architecture diagrams, engineering documentation, implementation records, configuration standards, operational-readiness checklists, transition plans, knowledge-transfer materials, and technical decision records. · Ensure engineering artifacts remain accurate, accessible, and sufficiently detailed to support supportability, auditability, operational readiness, and future lifecycle activities. · Provide leadership-ready status updates, deployment summaries, implementation risks, and delivery recommendations as required.

Behavioral Expectations (How this role operates) · Engineer for supportability. Design and implement solutions with operational sustainability, documentation, observability, resiliency, and support readiness in mind from the outset. · Partner across functions. Work collaboratively with Service Portfolio Architects, Service Delivery Managers, vendors, Managed Services Partners, project teams, and business stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes. · Build to standards. Promote adherence to architecture standards, approved patterns, and governance requirements while helping mature standards where gaps exist. · Own technical delivery outcomes. Take accountability for the quality, readiness, implementation success, and support transition of delivered solutions. · Maintain ownership through transition. Remain engaged through implementation, stabilization, documentation, knowledge transfer, and operational support handoff to ensure delivered solutions are successfully adopted and supportable. · Transfer knowledge deliberately. Ensure operational teams and partners receive the information, training, documentation, and context required for long-term support success. · Use operational feedback constructively. Incorporate lessons learned from hypercare, incidents, operational reviews, and support teams into future designs and delivery practices. · Focus on practical execution. Balance engineering rigor with business priorities, delivery timelines, operational readiness requirements, and stakeholder expectations.
