Original job description
Own the forecasts and economics that turn Eagle Ford well performance into every capital decision Flywheel makes.
Why this role matters
Responsible growth at Flywheel is measured in barrels per dollar, and this role is where that math gets done. The Reservoir Engineer owns the type curves, spacing analysis, development sequencing and reserves that drive the Eagle Ford drilling schedule. Every capital dollar spent in South Texas flows through the forecasts and economics this person builds and defends.
The Reservoir Engineer owns the forecasts and economics behind Flywheel's Eagle Ford development program across Gonzales, Lavaca, Fayette and DeWitt counties. Working inside the Eagle Ford asset team alongside geology, drilling, completions, production operations and reserves, this mid-career, hands-on role builds and maintains type curves, defines well spacing and stacking, runs well and program economics, books and defends reserves, and tracks actuals against forecast every month. The goal is to turn well performance data into the decisions that spend capital as efficiently as possible, then hold each forecast accountable to the production that follows.
Location: Oklahoma City, OK
Schedule: Full-Time (Monday to Friday, 9/80)
Department: Asset Development to Eagle Ford
Reports to: Director of Asset Development
What you'll own
Development Planning and Economics
- Build and maintain type curves for the Lower and Upper Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk across the black-oil, volatile-oil and gas-condensate windows
- Define well spacing, stagger and stacking, lateral length, landing zone and completion design with geology and completions, and quantify parent-child and depletion effects by location
- Run well, pad and program economics to high-grade and sequence the drilling inventory for the multi-rig development schedule
- Provide forecasts, economics and risk to AFEs, the annual budget and the long-range plan
Reserves and Forecasting
- Own decline-curve and rate-transient forecasts for producing wells and the undeveloped inventory, and book and defend reserves with third-party engineers
- Maintain the asset's ARIES cases covering forecasts, ownership, pricing, operating costs and capital, and explain the walk between cases
- Track actuals against forecast, type curve and plan every month and explain the variance
Well Performance and Base Optimization
- Set flowback and drawdown strategy for new wells with completions and production operations, and track results against the type curve
- Run post-frac lookbacks with geology and completions using early production and rate-transient diagnostics to identify reservoir drivers of performance
- Screen refrac, workover, artificial-lift and infill opportunities on the producing base, and track results against prediction
- Integrate PVT, pressure and surveillance data including DFITs, gauges and interference tests into consistent reservoir models across the oil-to-condensate transition
Data Integration and Analytics
- Pair engineering judgment with asset-team data tools including well-performance models, machine-learning forecasts and depletion and spacing analytics to test which drivers move results
- Keep forecasts, assumptions and economics current, documented and accessible to the full asset team
- Contribute reservoir engineering analysis to acquisition, divestiture, trade and partner-well evaluations as needed
Cross-Team Collaboration
- Serve as the reservoir engineering point of contact for the Eagle Ford development program
- Connect the Eagle Ford asset team with Subsurface Innovation, reserves, completions, production operations, land and finance so information moves freely across teams
- Communicate recommendations clearly to technical peers and leadership at well reviews, budget meetings and planning sessions
Qualifications
What you bring
Must have
- Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Engineering, or in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with reservoir engineering experience
- 5 or more years of upstream oil and gas engineering experience, including 3 or more years in reservoir engineering
- Primary focus on unconventional (horizontal shale) development
- Demonstrated decline-curve analysis, type-curve generation, reserves estimation and economic evaluation
- Proficiency with ARIES
Bonus points
- Eagle Ford, Austin Chalk or analogous Gulf Coast unconventional experience, including the volatile-oil and gas-condensate windows
- Rate-transient and pressure-transient analysis (e.g. whitson+, Harmony, KAPPA), including DFIT and interference-test interpretation
- Spacing, parent-child, frac-driven interaction and refrac evaluation in partnership with geology and completions
- Working data skills: Python or SQL, plus Spotfire or Power BI, applied to large well and production datasets
- Experience integrating workflows with new technologies including AI
- Artificial-lift and gas-lift familiarity across the life of an unconventional well
How we work: 100% Awesome Teammates
High-performing, self-directed teams made up of 100% awesome teammates: people who are very good at their jobs and who live our core behaviors every day. Every new hire should raise our ability to reach our goals, so we are ridiculously selective about who joins us.
- Do the Right Thing. Responsible development, honest feedback and doing what we said we would. In this role: In this role, Do the Right Thing looks like building type curves and reserves estimates that reflect your honest best judgment, even when the answer is fewer wells or lower EUR than the plan hoped for.
- Do it as a Team. No silos. Information moves between teams as freely as it does within one. In this role: In this role, Do it as a Team looks like debating spacing, landing zone and parent-child assumptions openly with geology, completions and operations, and updating your forecast when a teammate's data proves you wrong.
- Get Results. Disciplined execution and value creation. We measure ourselves by outcomes. In this role: In this role, Get Results looks like every Eagle Ford well tracking within a tight band of your type curve, and the drilling schedule reflecting a capital-efficient sequence you built and defended.
Is this you?
Successful Flywheelers are hungry, humble and people smart.
- Hungry: You proactively pull production data, pressure surveys and post-frac diagnostics before anyone asks, because you want your next forecast to be sharper than your last one.
- Humble: You present your type curves and economics as your best current view, invite challenge from geology and completions, and update your assumptions when the wells teach you something new.
- People Smart: You read when a well review needs a crisp headline for leadership versus a deep technical debate with the completions team, and you shift your communication style accordingly.
