Original job description

We’re looking for an Associate Principal to lead our New York office. This is a senior, client-facing role for a structural engineer who thrives on winning work, will be the face of Fast + Epp in New York City, and can build the team that delivers it.

You’ll own business development for the office, from building relationships and leading pursuits to securing new projects, while overseeing the design and delivery of the work you win. You bring established connections across New York’s architecture, development, and construction community, lead by example, and embody the firm’s Core Values. If you’re drawn to ambitious structures and a workplace that values your well-being, we encourage you to apply!

At Fast + Epp, our core purpose is to advance structural design and propel architectural imagination, through the designs we produce, the community we’ve built, and the growth we offer our people. We look for people who bring diverse perspectives, thrive in collaboration, lead with integrity, and instinctively ask, “Is there a better way to do this?”

Primary Responsibilities:

Leads Business Development for the New York office. Owns the regional pipeline and sales targets; identifies and pursues new opportunities, leads proposals, fee negotiations, and client interviews, and converts relationships into secured work.
Serves as the face of Fast + Epp in New York City. Represents the firm with clients, architects, developers, and industry organizations, speaks at events and conferences, and builds the firm’s reputation and visibility in the local market.
Maintains and deepens key external relationships (e.g., clients, architects, developers, contractors, key project stakeholders, and academia) and actively cultivates new ones to generate repeat and referral work.
Fulfills the duties and expectations of Office Lead and Regional Business Development Lead for New York: sets local priorities, grows the team, and is accountable for the office’s growth, culture, and performance.
Retains full responsibility for the design creativity, technical soundness, efficiency, and overall performance of their projects, including serving as Engineer of Record in line with targets for the Associate Principal level.
Demonstrates advanced engineering design on all projects, with strong conceptual design skills that help win and shape projects in their earliest stages.
Provides leadership, guidance, and mentorship for the New York team, working primarily out of the New York office.
Fulfills the duties and expectations of the Studio Manager role within their assigned Studio.
Advances the firm toward its overall goals by implementing the strategic direction set by the Leadership Group and the key initiatives advanced by the Management Team.

How you fit into the team:

You report directly to the Managing Principal
You work closely with one or more Studio Teams
You partner with the firm’s marketing and business development teams on pursuits

What you bring to the table:

Has a minimum of 12 years of directly applicable professional experience, including significant time in a senior, client-facing role.
Has a proven track record of winning work: leading pursuits, writing proposals, negotiating fees, and closing new projects.
Brings an established network across the New York City architecture, development, and construction community.
Has experience at the Associate level or equivalent; experience with Fast + Epp is an asset.
Holds Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in New York State is required; SE licensure is an asset.
Participates actively in professional, civic, and industry-based organizations, ideally within New York City.
Maintains a high regard among clients and works and communicates well with colleagues and other construction industry professionals.
Gains the confidence and respect of both peers and direct reports, and is regarded as a leader among the Associate group.
Regularly demonstrates selflessness and respect for the firm’s organizational structure.
Displays an extremely high level of engineering competence and can effectively mentor staff on both technical and project management concepts.
Possesses advanced communication, presentation, and proposal writing skills, and is comfortable leading client interviews and giving public presentations on behalf of the firm.
Possesses advanced management and leadership skills.

Why work for Fast + Epp?

At Fast + Epp, we strive to be more than a typical engineering firm. Our team is made up of musicians, volunteers, athletes, artists, parents, and community members; people who bring their full selves to work. We care about creating a workplace where people feel connected, supported, and inspired. From team socials and shared activities to flexible workdays that support life outside the office, we work intentionally to build a positive and collaborative environment. As we grow, we remain committed to maintaining a design studio atmosphere where creativity is encouraged, ideas are welcomed, and thoughtful problem-solving drives what we do.

What we offer:

The opportunity to work on exciting and technically challenging projects with an industry leader
A strong commitment to professional growth, including mentorship and clear career progression pathways, and support for courses, conferences, exams, and professional memberships
Flexible working hours that support work-life balance
Comprehensive bonus programs
A supportive and approachable leadership team
Long-service recognition, including sabbatical opportunities that allow employees to recharge, travel, learn, or pursue personal interests
Office closure between Christmas and New Year’s Day
Health and dental benefits and 401(k) matching
Transit subsidy

Compensation:

$175,000 – $225,000 USD
