Original job description
FULL STACK ENGINEER
Remote (US)
YOUR MISSION, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT
Join our team to build the fastest way to handle expenses, and give people back their time. We don’t want someone who closes tickets because they were assigned. We want someone who figures out what’s worth building and checks that it works for the people using it.
FULL STACK ENGINEER AT EXPENSIFY
We’re looking for a resourceful, self-directed engineer who is excited to work across product and engineering. You’ll work closely with other engineers, designers, customer-facing teams, and external contributors to turn rough ideas into reliable, shipped features.
Why Join Us?
- Own high-impact projects. We’re a small team. You’ll take projects from the first idea to a shipped feature, and you’ll be trusted to make the decisions along the way without handing them off or waiting for sign-off.
- Work at the intersection of product, code, and AI. AI is part of the product as a whole, not a separate effort. You’ll build features with it every day, and you’ll help decide what we build as well as how we build it.
- Work with people who care about the craft. You’ll be surrounded by smart, thoughtful colleagues who care about the quality of what we ship and the results it delivers, and who will hold your work to the same standard.
ABOUT YOU
- You manage yourself. We’re a flat organization, so nobody sets your day. You decide what matters, figure out for yourself whether it’s working, and keep moving without waiting to be told
- You write clearly, in code and in prose. We’re remote-first, so most of our thinking happens in docs, threads, and pull requests.
- You think like a product owner. You ask who a feature is for and why it matters first and enjoy getting into the predesign conversations.
- You work fluently with AI. We use it constantly, and you know how to direct it, check its work, and tell when it’s leading you astray
- You review others’ work with care. You can give direct, thoughtful feedback to open-source contributors and help them work better without slowing them down
- You have a strong grasp of design patterns and system design, and you can apply them in a production codebase
- You can work fluidly across departments, such as design, customer-facing teams, and engineering, and you’re great at communicating needs and tradeoffs
- You’re ambitious about your own growth and want to use this role to get somewhere specific, not staying comfortable anywhere for long.
- You have a self-starter mindset: proactively spotting gaps, diagnosing issues, and rolling up your sleeves to build or fix the most valuable thing without being asked
- You have a work ethic unequaled by your peers, are the hardest worker in the room, and are a force multiplier, inspiring others to follow your example.
Daily Focus & Responsibilities
- Plan, build, and maintain cross-stack features like accounting integrations, advanced receipt scanning, calendar integrations, and credit card transaction imports
- Squash bugs and improve the reliability of our app, so the things we ship keep working
- Maintain and improve high-quality code to give customers industry-leading experiences
- Review pull requests from internal engineers and external contributors, guiding both quality and direction
- Use AI tools across your workflow to increase efficiency, with good judgment about when to trust the output and when to dig in
- Make product calls on what to build, what to cut, and what to rethink, with clear reasoning for each
- Spot repetitive work and automate it, so no one does by hand what a script can do
- Share what you know: we’ll share our editor tricks, dotfiles, and productive workflows, and we want yours too
- Lift up the team around you to do more with less, work smarter, and pitch in to keep the lights on.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Strong command of design patterns and system design, applied in production-level code
- Clear communication, written and spoken, including native-level English
- A natural problem solver who automates solutions instead of repeating work
- An understanding of the role and impact programming has on the organization as a whole
- A drive to grow your skills in programming and leadership within the organization
- Experience with JavaScript, React, React Native, PHP, C++, Java, iOS, or Android
- (Bonus) Experience in maintaining a codebase that takes outside contributions, such as an open source project
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Full-time salaried position
- 401k with employer match
- 100% medical/dental/mental health support/vision contributions
- $20k annual family planning benefit through Carrot
- Up to 3 months of fully paid parental leave, with up to 6 months for birthing parents
- $5k relocation reimbursement if you move to one of our US offices (NYC, SF or PDX)
- Commuter benefits
- Flexible vacation policy
We’re committed to providing a fair and inclusive hiring experience. If you need a reasonable accommodation at any stage of the process, just let us know - we’re happy to help
