Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced System Engineer to join our Managed Services Engineering (MSE) team in St. Louis, MO. You will be our lead specialist in Linux systems, bare-metal provisioning, and infrastructure networking, building and maintaining the automation that turns bare-metal servers into production-ready platforms.

You will own our automated OS provisioning workflows, configuration management frameworks, Linux networking and routing services, and hardware validation tooling, and serve as a senior escalation resource for deployment and operations teams.

Responsibilities

  • Bare-Metal Provisioning & OS Lifecycle: Design, maintain, and evolve automated provisioning workflows, including network boot environments, live boot images, and unattended Linux installations. Lead OS lifecycle work such as package and repository management, service administration, and platform upgrades
  • Configuration Management & Automation: Build and maintain Puppet and Ansible automation, including custom modules, manifests, data hierarchies, and backend data stores
  • Provisioning Tooling: Develop and support Python and Bash applications and scripts for preboot staging, hardware discovery, and automated hardware validation
  • Linux Networking, Routing & Security: Administer, troubleshoot, and modernize Linux network services, including dynamic routing, VPN, proxy services, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management
  • Server Hardware Validation: Define and validate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for enterprise server platforms, manage out-of-band configuration, and resolve hardware discrepancies during bring-up
  • Technical Escalation: Act as the escalation point for deployment and support teams on provisioning failures, hardware mismatches, and complex Linux networking and routing issues

Required Qualifications

  • Enterprise Linux (5+ years): Senior-level systems engineering experience on RHEL and Rocky Linux 9/10. RHCSA or RHCE certification is a strong plus
  • Configuration Management: Hands-on experience with Puppet (modules, manifests, Hiera, Facter, Ruby) and Ansible
  • Bare-Metal Provisioning: Practical experience with PXE/iPXE, live boot image generation (dracut/initramfs), unattended installers (Anaconda/Kickstart), and provisioning tools such as Razor or Foreman
  • Python & Bash: Proficiency in systems automation, CLI tooling, REST API integration, and structured data formats (JSON, YAML)
  • Databases: Experience with NoSQL and relational databases (such as CouchDB and PostgreSQL) that store infrastructure and configuration data
  • Linux Networking & Routing: Deep knowledge of IP networking, NIC bonding, VLANs, multiple routing tables, policy-based routing (ip rule/ip route), firewalling (iptables/nftables), and packet analysis (tcpdump)
  • VPN, Proxy & Routing Daemons: Experience configuring and troubleshooting OpenVPN, SSL/TLS certificates (OpenSSL/PKI), proxy services (such as Squid), and routing daemons (such as BIRD)
  • Linux Troubleshooting: Strong command of systemd, dnf/yum/rpm, storage and filesystems, and diagnostic tools (journalctl, strace, lsof, ss, dmesg)
  • Hardware & Out-of-Band Management: Familiarity with enterprise server hardware (Dell, Intel, AMD), BOM verification, and lights-out management tools (iDRAC, IPMI, RACADM, Redfish)
  • Collaboration: Proficiency with Git, clear technical documentation, and effective communication across engineering and deployment teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Containers & Virtualization: Experience with Docker and virtual machine or hypervisor environments
  • Observability & Service Management: Familiarity with Telegraf, Prometheus, and Grafana, and with ServiceNow and Jira
