Job Details

The Manager, Database Administration is responsible for the design, implementation, performance, and operational management of enterprise database systems supporting mission-critical applications and reporting platforms. This role combines deep technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, guiding database architecture, operational excellence, and team development.

The individual will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including software engineering, data engineering, DevOps, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality database solutions aligned with organizational objectives. In addition to technical responsibilities, this role provides managerial leadership including mentoring database professionals, establishing best practices, and driving continuous improvement across database operations and data platform engineering.

The position plays a key role in cultivating technical guidance, architecture standards, and operational procedures while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment.

Responsibilities

The Manager, Database Administration will provide both technical leadership and operational oversight, ensuring database systems are scalable, reliable, secure, and aligned with enterprise architecture standards. This position requires expertise in database performance and availability, strong understanding of business and technical requirements, and the ability to guide teams in delivering innovative and reliable solutions.

The role also requires team leadership, mentorship, and coordination across geographically dispersed teams, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Leadership & Management Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to database administrators, data engineers, and development teams.
• Guide and develop team members through coaching, knowledge sharing, and professional development initiatives.
• Lead database architecture decisions and establish standards for database design, security, and operational practices.
• Collaborate with IT leadership to develop strategic plans for database infrastructure, scalability, and modernization.
• Coordinate work across distributed teams and manage priorities across multiple projects and operational demands.
• Participate in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation of database team members when applicable.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence, and accountability across database operations.
• Act as a key technical advisor to leadership on database technologies, platform improvements, and performance strategies.

Technical & Operational Responsibilities

• Manage and monitor enterprise database environments ensuring availability, reliability, and optimal performance.
• Oversee database job scheduling and ensure failures are resolved promptly to maintain uninterrupted business operations.
• Translate technical requirements into robust database solutions, working closely with software engineers and system architects.
• Lead database design efforts for new systems and enhancements including schema architecture, indexing strategies, and performance optimization.
• Participate in system implementation projects including requirement gathering, database development, testing, issue resolution, and deployment.
• Manage database change management processes ensuring safe and compliant promotion of changes through development, QA, and production environments.
• Diagnose and resolve database access issues, performance bottlenecks, and operational incidents.
• Review and optimize database objects including views, triggers, stored procedures, and queries to improve system efficiency.
• Monitor and manage on-premises and cloud-based data storage utilization and capacity planning.
• Support the implementation and testing of redundancy, high-availability configurations, and disaster recovery procedures.
• Establish and enforce policies related to database authentication, data access control, security compliance, and auditing.
• Develop and maintain documentation for database architecture, operational procedures, and recovery processes.
• Provide operational support for existing application databases and technical support for new development initiatives.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent professional experience.

Experience

• 5+ years of experience administering enterprise databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or similar platforms.
• 5+ years of experience operating in large enterprise environments with mission-critical systems.
• 2+ years of production support experience diagnosing and resolving complex system issues.
• Prior experience supporting database environments in cloud environments like Azure or AWS.
• Prior experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, or leading database initiatives strongly preferred.
• Understanding of healthcare data management, clinical informatics, or healthcare analytics is a plus (health records, patient claims).

Skills & Abilities

• Strong database architecture expertise across relational and non-relational systems
• Experience with enterprise data architecture including ETL pipelines, SOA, and cloud-based data platforms
• Working knowledge of data warehouse design methodologies and dimensional modeling
• Experience with ETL tools such as Informatica, SSIS, or similar integration platforms
• Familiarity with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Couchbase) and semi-structured data formats
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and performance tuning skills

Physical/Mental Demands: This position is administrative in nature and will present physical demands requisite to a position requiring: hearing, seeing, sitting, standing, talking, and walking. Must be able to commute to multiple site locations within assigned territory. May be necessary to work extended hours as needed.

Schedule: This is a full-time position with an expectation to work an average of 40 hours per week and be available outside of normal business hours to meet customer expectations on an ad-hoc basis. Schedules are set to accommodate the requirements of the position and the needs of the organization and may be adjusted as needed.

Travel: Travel may be required for special organization or department events, department team meetings, trade shows, conferences, and other client engagements.
