Original job description

Epic Scientific LLC is looking for a Technical Writer to join our team in Aberdeen, Maryland. This is a full-time position supporting a government contract, and the role’s primary duty is keeping an existing bank of software manuals accurate, useful, and up-to-date.

Most of the role’s daily work will involve reviewing existing documentation and making targeted updates as softwareevolves through bi-weekly Agile development sprints. You'll also pitch in on training materials, user guides, and other documentation projects.

This is a largely independent role (following a period of handholding during onboarding). You'll manage your own workload while working alongside supervisors and technical experts to get the details right.

Time allowing, additional job duties may include a variety of documentation tasks, such as assisting engineers and other technical staff with preparing reports, writing hardware setup guides, and creating/editing various technical documents.

Opportunities for limited travel to CONUS military installations (with all standard per diem compensation) are available, if desired.

What you'll do

  • Review software manuals and update content to reflect new features, changing workflows, and user feedback.
  • Make focused revisions on a regular sprint schedule, tracking changes through review and release.
  • Collaborate with developers and technical experts to verify information and resolve questions.
  • Keep documentation clear, consistent, organized, and easy to follow.
  • Help create and maintain user guides, training materials, release notes, procedures, and relateddocuments.
  • Manage assignments independently, meet deadlines, and communicate when you need input.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in English, technical writing, communications, journalism, instructional design, information systems, or a related field.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn unfamiliar software and explain technical concepts in plain English.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, including Track Changes, comments, and formatting.
  • Ability to work independently, juggle assignments, and meet deadlines.
  • A writing or editing sample that demonstrates your skills. College projects and internship work are perfectly fine.

Nice to have

  • Experience with software manuals, technical documentation, or training materials.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development or sprint-based workflows.
  • Experience with SharePoint, version control, or documentation management tools.
  • An active U.S. government Secret clearance.

An active Secret clearance is a plus, but you do not need one to apply or start work. If your assignment eventually requires classified access, Epic Scientific will sponsor the necessary government vetting process. Standard U.S. personnel clearances generally require U.S. citizenship, and final eligibility is determined by thegovernment.
