AI Engineer Los Angeles, CA | Full Time
COMPENSATION RANGE: 120,000.00 - 140,000.00
Job Summary We are seeking an AI / Applications Engineer to build the agents and applications that put our data to work. You will design, build, and evaluate AI agents that automate real operational workflows, and you will build the interfaces through which people interact with them. This is an applied engineering role rather than a research one: success is measured by whether agents produce correct, trusted answers in production, and whether people actually use what you ship. We care far more about your judgment in building reliable LLM systems than about which specific platform you have used. Our warehouse runs on Snowflake, but the patterns transfer, and we expect the right candidate to come up to speed on our stack quickly.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operationalize AI agents that automate operational workflows across the business.
- Develop and register the tools and skills that agents invoke - SQL and function tools, API tools, search services - and integrate them into agent frameworks and orchestration layers.
- Own agent evaluation: define what a correct answer looks like before building, build evaluation sets, and measure accuracy, hallucination, latency, and inference cost over time.
- Monitor agents in production and act on what the measurements show, including regression detection when prompts, models, or underlying data change.
- Build web interfaces and data applications that put data, models, and agents in front of users, including internal tools and agent front-ends.
- Build retrieval pipelines - chunking, embedding, and indexing strategies - to power semantic search and grounding.
- Contribute to the context layer that agents depend on, structuring and enriching trusted data for retrieval-augmented generation and text-to-SQL, in partnership with the analytics engineering function.
- Manage tool access and permissions so that agents reach only the data they should.
- Partner with business stakeholders to identify workflows worth automating, scope them realistically, and set expectations about what these systems can and cannot do.
- Maintain clear documentation of agent design, tool definitions, prompts, and evaluation results.
Required Skills
- Strong Python, including experience writing production-ready, testable code.
- Solid SQL and comfort working directly against a data warehouse.
- Demonstrated experience building LLM-powered applications that reached production, not only prototypes or demos.
- Practical understanding of LLM application patterns: retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings and vector search, prompt engineering, structured output, and grounding responses in governed data.
- Experience with agent and tool-calling frameworks - LangChain, LlamaIndex, MCP, the OpenAI or Anthropic SDKs, or comparable - and a clear understanding of how to expose data and functions as agent tools.
- Experience building user-facing applications, whether in a Python framework such as Streamlit or Gradio, or a JavaScript framework such as React or Next.js.
- Experience defining and running evaluations, and the ability to reason clearly about failure modes in non-deterministic systems.
- Experience with version control, testing, and CI/CD using Git and related DevOps tools. Nice to Haves
- Experience with vector databases or embedding stores - pgvector, Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Elasticsearch, or similar - and semantic search at scale.
- Familiarity with LLM observability and evaluation tooling such as LangSmith, Langfuse, Braintrust, Arize, or comparable platforms.
- Experience with more than one model provider, and judgment about model selection, routing, and cost-performance trade-offs.
- Experience managing inference cost and latency in production, including caching, batching, and choosing smaller models where they suffice.
- Familiarity with cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, or Redshift, and with AI-native features on those platforms.
- Experience with containerized deployment using Docker or a managed container service.
- Experience with data transformation tools such as dbt.
- Awareness of AI governance - access controls, PII handling, audit trails, and lineage for data feeding AI systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and to set realistic expectations about AI capabilities and limits.
- A portfolio, repository, or set of shipped projects you can walk us through is welcome but not required.
- Interest in staying current with the rapidly evolving generative AI and agentic engineering landscape.
