Original job description
Enjet Aero machines and fabricates complex jet engine parts, components and assemblies for leading OEMs in the commercial, defense and general aviation sectors. Our goal is to be regarded as an irreplaceable resource by our customers. The only way for a company to meet such a goal is to consistently meet production deadlines and expectations. Your work has a destination! Enjoy competitive pay, excellent benefits, a company profit sharing bonus plan, and more while building precision aerospace components that help aircraft fly safely around the world. Join a growing, industry-leading aerospace manufacturer where your work makes an impact and your career can take off Position Description: The Manufacturing & Process Engineer (Sheet Metal & Fabrication) is responsible for developing, documenting, and continuously improving the processes used to form, weld, and assemble complex sheet metal jet engine components and assemblies. This role owns the process from blank development through forming, welding, heat treat, and final assembly, and uses production and inspection data to drive process changes that improve quality, yield, and on-time delivery. We are looking for a seasoned, hands-on engineer with deep sheet metal fabrication experience who can turn a customer print into a stable, well-documented, repeatable process.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Determines the methodology and process routing for sheet metal details, welded assemblies, and riveted assemblies – from flat pattern/blank development through laser cutting, forming, welding, machining, heat treat, and final inspection
- Develops, proves out, and qualifies forming processes, including press brake forming, rolling and roll forming, hydroforming, spinning, and expanding/sizing
- Develops welding processes and weld schedules for TIG (GTAW), resistance spot, and resistance seam welding in accordance with aerospace and customer specifications
- Writes clear, detailed manufacturing documentation for shop floor use, including process sheets/routers, work instructions, set-up sheets, and weld schedules
- Designs (or specifies and oversees the build of) forming tools, weld fixtures, assembly/drill fixtures, and inspection fixtures; works closely with the toolroom on tool build and tryout
- Collects and analyzes process and inspection data (SPC, CMM/inspection results, scrap, rework, and yield) and uses it to justify and implement process changes, reduce variation, and improve first-pass yield
- Leads root cause and corrective action (RCCA) investigations for nonconformances – from containment through root cause identification, implementation of permanent corrective action, and verification of effectiveness
- Troubleshoots forming, welding, and assembly processes on the shop floor (e.g., springback, cracking, wrinkling, weld porosity/cracking, distortion, fit-up issues) and turns findings into documented process improvements that prevent recurrence
- Reviews customer drawings, specifications, and PO requirements; interprets GD&T; creates shop drawings and in-process sketches with proper dimensioning and tolerancing
- Supports special process requirements (welding, laser, heat treat, NDT) in accordance with customer requirements
- Partners with Quality, Production, Programming, and the Toolroom; provides hands-on support and training to operators on the shop floor
- Drives continuous improvement using Lean manufacturing principles
Qualifications (Required):
- 10+ years’ experience as a manufacturing, process, or fabrication engineer in an aerospace or similar precision sheet metal environment (jet engine component experience strongly preferred)
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Welding Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience
- Extensive hands-on experience with sheet metal forming and fabrication
- Flat pattern/blank development, bend allowance, springback, and forming limits
- Press brake forming, rolling, and hydroforming
- Strong working knowledge of welding processes and weld fixturing
- TIG (GTAW), resistance spot, and resistance seam welding
- Weld joint design, distortion control, and fixture/backing/purge design
- Process development – proven track record of taking a part from print to a stable, documented, repeatable process
- Technical writing – able to write clear, accurate work instructions, process sheets, and engineering reports
- Root cause & corrective action – hands-on experience leading RCCA investigations and implementing permanent fixes
- Process troubleshooting – ability to diagnose forming, welding, and assembly problems at the machine and drive process improvements
- Data-driven decision making – experience using SPC, inspection data, and yield/scrap metrics to drive process changes
- Knowledge of different metal types and how they form and weld – High Nickel Alloys (Inconel 625/718, Hastelloy X), Titanium, Aluminum, etc., including the effects of heat treat and stress relief
- Strong blueprint reading and GD&T
- Able to communicate effectively and efficiently with all levels of the organization
- Able to collaborate fluently in a team environment
- Possible travel as required for training
Preferred Qualifications (candidates with the following will be strongly preferred):
- Siemens NX user – modeling and drafting
- Experience with expanding, roll forming, and metal spinning
- Assembly and riveting experience (solid and blind rivets)
- Fixture design and tool making experience
- Knowledge of manual machining (mills, lathes)
- Knowledge of laser fixture design and laser processing
- CNC programming knowledge (G and M code, NX CAM) and/or laser programming
- Experience working within an AS9100 quality management system
- Working knowledge of aerospace standards and special processes (welding, heat treat, NDT)
- Experience working to jet engine OEM specifications (e.g., GE Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell)
- Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma training or certification
