Firmware Engineer Job Title: Firmware Engineer Job Type: Full-Time Experience: 0–5 Years Work Mode: Hybrid Estimated Salary: $75,000–$120,000 per year Locations: Austin, TX | San Jose, CA | Seattle, WA | Dallas, TX | Boston, MA Job Summary We are seeking a motivated Firmware Engineer to develop, test, debug, and maintain firmware for embedded devices and connected hardware products. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in embedded systems, programming fundamentals, and hardware-software integration. Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and CSS may be useful for developing supporting web interfaces, device dashboards, and configuration tools. This role is suitable for entry-level candidates and experienced engineers who are eager to build reliable firmware solutions and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain firmware for embedded devices and hardware platforms.
  • Assist in developing low-level software for microcontrollers and embedded systems.
  • Debug firmware issues and investigate hardware-software integration problems.
  • Write scripts and utilities to support firmware testing, automation, and diagnostics.
  • Develop web-based dashboards and device configuration interfaces using JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and CSS when required.
  • Integrate embedded devices with APIs, cloud services, and monitoring platforms.
  • Perform unit testing, integration testing, debugging, and system validation.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers, software developers, QA teams, and product managers.
  • Participate in code reviews, Agile ceremonies, and technical design discussions.
  • Maintain firmware documentation, test procedures, and technical specifications.
  • Optimize software reliability, performance, memory usage, and power consumption.
  • Follow coding standards, security practices, and engineering quality guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 0–5 years of experience in firmware development, embedded software, or related engineering work.
  • Knowledge of programming fundamentals and debugging techniques.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and CSS, or willingness to develop these skills.
  • Understanding of software development, testing, and version control using Git.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a hybrid engineering environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of C or C++ for embedded programming.
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers, embedded Linux, or real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Understanding of communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, or USB.
  • Experience with firmware debugging tools, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, IoT systems, and device connectivity.
  • Exposure to automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and Agile methodologies.
  • Personal projects, internships, or academic projects involving embedded systems are welcome.

Salary Range

Estimated annual base salary by experience:

  • Entry-Level (0–1 year): $75,000–$85,000
  • Junior Engineer (1–3 years): $85,000–$100,000
  • Experienced Engineer (3–5 years): $100,000–$120,000

Compensation varies by location, qualifications, technical skills, and employer.

Benefits

Depending on the employer, benefits may include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Professional development and training opportunities
  • Hybrid work flexibility
  • Performance-based bonuses, where applicable

Job Locations

  • Austin, Texas
  • San Jose, California
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Boston, Massachusetts

Work Arrangement: Hybrid, combining remote work with on-site collaboration according to team and project requirements. Equal Employment Opportunity: We welcome qualified applicants from diverse backgrounds and provide equal employment opportunities. Note: JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and CSS are primarily used for web development rather than low-level firmware engineering. Candidates with C/C++, microcontroller, and embedded systems experience will generally be better aligned with traditional firmware responsibilities.
