Original job description

Build and lead a capable, accountable structural engineering team that delivers technically sound, practical work on scope, schedule, budget, and quality by owning people, capacity, assignments, technical standards, proposal input, technical risk, and continuous improvement.

EAD supports engineering, automation, and project delivery in industrial and manufacturing facilities. Work is often multi-discipline, fast-moving, and performed in active or existing facilities where sound judgment, safety, quality, clear communication, and dependable execution matter.

Role Summary

The Manager, Structural Engineering owns structural engineering people, capacity, assignments, technical standards, review coverage, proposal and estimate input, capability development, and discipline quality across the Project Delivery Group. The role is a working manager with expected billable contribution generally 50-75%. Project Managers own overall project delivery; this role owns who performs the discipline work, whether the assigned team is capable and available, and whether the discipline work is technically sound and properly reviewed.

Reports to: VP, Project Delivery

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead employees and working leads through assignments, priorities, coaching, performance feedback, hiring, onboarding, development, licensure, and succession.
  • Own the 13-week discipline capacity view and all assignment decisions affecting discipline employees. Use prioritized, time-phased demand from Project Managers and the Director, Project Management to assign qualified people based on capability, availability, workload, development needs, and project commitments.
  • Establish the minimum discipline execution-planning standard and ensure qualified Project Discipline Leads develop and maintain right-sized engineering execution plans for applicable projects. Verify that discipline scope, deliverables, hours, staffing, schedule, quality reviews, codes and standards, technical risks, mitigation actions, and coordination requirements remain current.
  • Lead or approve discipline proposal and estimate inputs, including technical scope, deliverables, hours, staffing, schedule, assumptions, exclusions, interfaces, review requirements, and execution risks. Develop practical mitigation strategies and escalate material residual risk before EAD makes the commitment.
  • Own discipline technical standards, checklists, responsible-charge coverage, technical-review practices, competency expectations, and lessons learned. Ensure required technical reviews and issue closures occur before release.
  • Partner with Project Managers, who own overall project scope, schedule, budget, changes, client commitments, Project Execution Plans, Project Execution Checklists, and coordination across disciplines and workstreams.
  • Maintain practical visibility into discipline DLU/RevGen, planned-versus-actual effort, upcoming commitments, quality results, available capacity, overload, and capability gaps; act early or escalate when the discipline cannot support the commitment.
  • Provide discipline-specific technical leadership for structural analysis and calculations; foundations, supports, platforms, mezzanines, wall/floor/roof systems, equipment supports, brownfield modifications, field investigation, undocumented conditions, constructability, and code compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Professional Engineer license required; able to personally produce, review, serve in responsible charge, and seal structural work.
  • Strong industrial structural engineering experience and progressive multi-project leadership.
  • Demonstrated resource planning, assignment, proposal, technical review, coaching, and client-facing capability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, sound judgment, organization, and dependable follow-through.
  • Ability to work effectively across offices, disciplines, project teams, and client organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial or manufacturing facilities and brownfield project environments.
  • Experience with Unanet AE, Microsoft 365, and project-based reporting or collaboration tools.

Behavioral Expectations

  • High Character - Acts with integrity, accuracy, discretion, and sound judgment; raises safety, quality, financial, contractual, and people concerns early.
  • Own the Outcome - Takes responsibility, follows through, closes loops, and creates clarity when priorities or conditions change.
  • Positive Mindset - Stays practical, respectful, steady, and solution-oriented through pressure, ambiguity, and change.
  • Empower Successful Teams - Gives people clear expectations, useful context, timely feedback, and the support and authority needed to succeed.

Working Conditions

Office and computer work are regular. Project, client-site, plant, and field conditions may include stairs, ladders, tight spaces, moving equipment, noise, dust, chemicals, and required PPE. Occasional evening, weekend, holiday, startup, or shutdown work may be required based on the role and project. Travel is required as project and leadership needs require.
