The Analytics Engineer serves as a trusted analytics partner supporting clinical, operational, and quality initiatives across Duke Health. This role partners with stakeholders to develop reporting, analytics, and decision-support solutions that improve patient outcomes, support operational excellence, advance quality and patient safety, and enable informed decision making.
The position will support a diverse portfolio of analytics initiatives, including areas such as Pain and Opioid Analytics and Quality Analytics, while also playing an important role in the team’s transition to Microsoft Fabric. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with the ability to understand complex healthcare needs and translate them into scalable, accurate, and actionable analytics solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with clinical, operational, and business stakeholders to understand needs, establish priorities, and develop data-driven solutions supporting strategic and operational objectives.
- Serve as a trusted analytics advisor by proactively communicating project progress, risks, dependencies, and opportunities to stakeholders.
- Design, develop, validate, document, and maintain reporting, semantic models, dashboards, and analytics solutions that provide accurate, timely, and actionable information.
- Develop and maintain SQL queries, data transformations, reusable data assets, and governed analytics solutions supporting clinical, operational, quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to the organization’s transition to Microsoft Fabric by developing and supporting modern data pipelines, data models, semantic models, and Power BI solutions.
- Translate complex healthcare data and analytical findings into clear, meaningful insights for audiences ranging from operational teams to senior leadership.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to improve data collection, reporting efficiency, data quality, governance, and operational performance.
- Participate in analytics engineering best practices, including documentation, source control, peer review, testing, deployment, and ongoing solution support.
- Manage multiple assignments and projects while maintaining clear communication and delivering solutions that meet customer and organizational needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a healthcare environment with an understanding of clinical operations, quality improvement, patient safety, regulatory reporting, or performance improvement.
- Epic certification or demonstrated proficiency with Epic Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito, or other Epic clinical and operational data models.
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, including semantic models, Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, Dataflows, Pipelines, or related analytics capabilities.
- Experience developing dashboards, scorecards, reports, and self-service analytics solutions using Power BI, Tableau, or similar business intelligence platforms.
- Strong SQL development, dimensional modeling, semantic modeling, and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Experience developing ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines, and modern analytics engineering solutions.
- Experience with Git, GitLab, Azure DevOps, source control, peer review, or CI/CD deployment practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate business and technical requirements into effective analytics solutions.

Required Qualifications
Education and Training
Bachelor's degree in a related field or four years of equivalent technical experience is required.
Licensure and Certification
None required. Certification in Epic Cogito, a Cogito data model, or an analytics engineering technology such as Microsoft Fabric is preferred.
Experience
- Level 1: No experience is required beyond the minimum education or equivalency requirement.
- Level 2: Two years of directly related experience is required. Prior experience with Microsoft Fabric, GitLab, and CI/CD practices is preferred.
- Level 3: Four years of directly related experience is required. Prior experience with Microsoft Fabric, GitLab, and CI/CD practices is preferred.
- Team Lead: 5+ years of related experience, including approximately 3+ years of demonstrated leadership through projects, initiatives, mentoring, coordination or technical direction.
