Original job description
Senior Full Stack Java Developer
Why You'll Actually Care District Partners is exclusively representing a professional services firm supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection through a major technology transformation of critical systems that help safeguard the nation’s borders and enable lawful trade and travel. Following a five-year contract renewal, the team is expanding its engineering capabilities to build and modernize data-intensive applications supporting threat analysis, targeting, and operational decision-making. You’ll build Java services, modern user interfaces, and integrated analytical capabilities that put complex information into the hands of the people making those decisions.
The Basics This is a hands-on full stack development role with a strong Java backend emphasis. You’ll develop and maintain enterprise applications, REST APIs, containerized microservices, and automated delivery pipelines, while contributing to architecture and mentoring junior developers.
What You'll Be Owning
• Backend Engineering: Develop and maintain Java services using Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and related enterprise Java technologies, applying object-oriented design principles and appropriate design patterns.
• Frontend Development: Build features using React, Angular, or Vue.js, connecting user workflows with backend APIs, data services, and analytical capabilities.
• Service Integration: Design and consume RESTful APIs, develop microservices, and implement communication between services using technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or gRPC.
• Production Delivery: Build and deploy containerized applications with Docker and Kubernetes, supported by CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, Harness, or comparable tools.
• Quality And Maintainability: Write unit tests, participate in system testing, improve existing code, and document application behavior, data flows, and service interactions.
• Technical Contribution: Participate in architecture decisions, support junior engineers, and integrate analytical and AI/ML services into working applications.
The Environment The environment combines Java backend services, modern JavaScript frontends, messaging technologies, and containerized deployments. Relevant platforms include AWS, relational and NoSQL databases, and distributed processing and search tools. Understanding the mission is part of the engineering work. You’ll learn how operational users apply the software, investigate unfamiliar systems independently, and build relationships that help translate complex requirements into practical functionality.
What You Bring To The Table
• Education: A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from a well-recognized U.S. university is required. A master’s degree in Computer Science is preferred.
• Experience: Approximately 5–10 years of relevant software development experience, including delivery and maintenance of production enterprise applications.
• Java Depth: Strong core Java, object-oriented programming, design patterns, Spring Boot, and Spring Framework experience, backed by specific examples of code and services you personally developed.
• Full Stack Capability: Hands-on frontend development using React, Angular, Vue.js, or a comparable modern JavaScript framework, plus REST API design and integration.
• Microservices And Containers: Experience developing microservices and building and deploying containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Delivery And Integration: Hands-on CI/CD pipeline configuration, automated testing, and version control, with practical experience using messaging or service communication technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or gRPC.
• Eligibility: U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a CBP background investigation. Existing DHS or equivalent clearance is preferred.
Additional Technical Experience That Stands Out
- AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, and EKS.
- Relational databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL and NoSQL platforms such as MongoDB.
- Distributed processing and search technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, Impala, Elasticsearch, or Solr.
- Integration of AI/ML services into enterprise applications.
- Agile/Scrum development experience.
The Intangibles That Matter
• Technical Credibility: You can walk through an application you built, explain your personal contribution, and discuss design choices, debugging, testing, and deployment in concrete terms.
• Clear Communication: You explain technical problems and tradeoffs clearly, ask focused questions, and collaborate effectively with engineers and operational stakeholders.
• Independent Learning: You investigate unfamiliar code and business processes, seek out the right people, and develop the context needed to make sound engineering decisions.
• Ownership And Follow-Through: You carry work through implementation, testing, documentation, and delivery, and raise obstacles early.
• Mission Awareness: You connect technical decisions to the operational problem and care about whether the delivered functionality helps users accomplish their work.
• Commitment To The Process: You understand that government onboarding requires patience and responsiveness, and you can commit to the initial onsite schedule.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
• Target Pay: $50–$60 per hour.
• Location: Ashburn, Virginia.
• Work Model: Onsite five days per week for the first 6–12 months, followed by a hybrid schedule.
• Candidate Profile: Currently employed candidates considering their next move are the priority. A two-week notice period after clearance is acceptable.
• Start Timing: Start date depends on completion of the required background approval process.
