Original job description

HIRING A PYTHON DEVELOPER I IN HOUSTON

ACCOUNTABILITY

The Python Developer I is an entry-level role responsible for designing, building, and supporting automations and AI-enabled tools that reduce manual effort and improve quality across the firm’s MEP engineering, design, and business operations. Working under the guidance of Director of IT, the developer delivers Python and PowerShell scripts, Microsoft Power Automate workflows, and pyRevit scripts that support engineers, designers, and project staff. The developer works within established coding standards, Azure DevOps processes, and the firm’s IT security and AI-use policies; production deployments, access to sensitive project or client data, and changes to firm-wide systems require review and change management approval.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Develop, test, and maintain Python scripts and small applications that automate repetitive engineering, design, and administrative workflows (e.g., load and equipment schedules, calculation spreadsheets, report and file generation).
Build and maintain no-code/low-code automations using Microsoft Power Automate and related Microsoft 365 tools (SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, Excel, Forms, Power Apps).
Create and support Autodesk Revit automation using pyRevit, Dynamo, and/or the Revit API to help MEP design teams with model QA/QC checks, sheet and view setup, parameter management, and data export.
Assist in integrating AI capabilities - such as large language models and document/data extraction tools - into internal workflows, in line with the firm’s data security and responsible AI-use guidelines.
Meet with engineers, designers, and project staff to understand manual processes and pain points, document requirements, and translate them into user stories and technical tasks.
Use Azure DevOps for source control (Git), work item tracking, code reviews, and build/release pipelines.
Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives, and provide accurate estimates and status updates.
Write clear documentation and user guides, train end users on new tools, and provide troubleshooting and support for deployed automations.
Monitor, maintain, and improve existing automations to keep them reliable as software versions, templates, and firm standards change.
Perform additional assignments as requested/needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Associate's degree combined with a strong portfolio of Python or automation projects (e.g., GitHub repositories, internship work, or class projects) will be considered.
Degree Required: Associate degree or higher in a technical field.
Experience: 0–2 years of related experience; internships, co-ops, and substantial academic or personal projects count toward this requirement.

CERTIFICATIONS

No certifications are required.
Microsoft certifications in Power Platform, Azure, or Azure AI (fundamentals or associate level) are a plus.
Agile or Scrum certification (e.g., PSM I, CSM) is a plus.

EXPERIENCE

0–2 years of experience in software development, scripting, or automation, including internships, co-ops, or significant academic/personal projects.
Hands-on experience writing Python and/or PowerShell scripts; a portfolio or code samples are welcome.
Exposure to no-code/low-code automation platforms such as Microsoft Power Automate, Power Apps, or comparable tools preferred.
Experience with Azure DevOps (Repos, Boards, Pipelines) or a comparable Git-based development platform preferred.
Exposure to Autodesk Revit - including the Revit API, Dynamo, or pyRevit - preferred.
Experience working on a team using Agile development practices (Scrum or Kanban) preferred.
Experience using or integrating AI tools, large language model APIs, or prompt engineering is a plus.
Experience or coursework in the AEC, MEP, or professional engineering services industry is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of Python fundamentals, including data structures, functions, modules, error handling, virtual environments, and common libraries (e.g., pandas, openpyxl, requests).
Basic PowerShell scripting skills for Windows and Microsoft 365 automation.
Understanding of version control with Git, including branching, commits, and pull requests.
Familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, and working with data in Excel, CSV, and SQL databases.
Basic understanding of AI and large language model concepts, their limitations, and responsible use with company and client data.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to break a manual process into automatable steps.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical topics to engineers and non-technical staff.
Attention to detail and a commitment to testing, documentation, and code quality.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, take direction and feedback, and work both independently and as part of a team.
Interest in learning MEP engineering concepts (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection) and BIM workflows.
