The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining production software that supports Molecular Devices' life science instruments, including licensing applications, installers, diagnostic utilities, and related product software. This senior individual-contributor role focuses on application-level development, connected-device integration, and troubleshooting across software and hardware boundaries.
This position reports to the Supervisor, Software Engineering and is part of the Imaging Software Engineering team located in Downingtown, PA. This is an on-site role with no direct reports.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

- Installers and Support Tools: Develop and maintain Windows installers, launchers, diagnostic utilities, configuration tools, and customer- and service-facing support applications. Use Python and PowerShell to automate reliable installation, upgrade, configuration, and troubleshooting workflows, with C# where appropriate. Partner with Operations and Manufacturing to prepare these tools and licensing workflows for instrument builds, production release, and shipment.
- Instrument Software Integration: Develop and support application software that communicates with scientific instruments and connected devices. Investigate integration issues and collaborate with firmware and device-driver developers to resolve problems across system boundaries.
- Software Quality and Lifecycle Ownership: Take ownership of software from design and implementation through testing, release, troubleshooting, corrective maintenance, and long-term support. Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, defect investigation, documentation, and risk-based decision-making within a structured product-development environment.
The essential requirements of the job include:
- Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 7+ years of professional software development experience; equivalent directly relevant experience may be considered.
- Software Application Development: Strong Python development skills and demonstrated experience designing, implementing, testing, debugging, and maintaining production software. Experience developing or maintaining Windows applications, installers, deployment utilities, diagnostic tools, or support software. Working knowledge of PowerShell and experience with C# or another strongly typed application-development language. Ability to understand established codebases, identify root causes, and implement maintainable corrective changes.
- Angular and Database-Backed Applications: Professional experience developing or maintaining applications using Angular and TypeScript, REST APIs, and databases. Hands-on experience with MongoDB or a comparable document database, including data modeling, queries, integration, and troubleshooting.
- Hardware-Connected Software: Professional experience developing or maintaining application software that communicates with physical devices, including troubleshooting interactions with operating systems, device drivers, firmware, SDKs, or communication interfaces.
- Operations and Manufacturing Partnership: Experience working with Operations or Manufacturing to prepare software for new-product introduction and production release. Experience supporting product or instrument builds and resolving software issues affecting manufacturing or shipment.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Scientific or Imaging Applications: Developing software for laboratory instruments, microscopy, imaging systems, or analytical equipment.
Travel and Work Environment Requirements
