Original job description

Our client is a growing, founder-led multifamily and commercial exterior construction contractor. The company is privately held, not private equity–backed, and has no plans to be. Growth is reinvested in the business and its people, and decisions are made by the people who run it rather than by an investor timeline. The company installs tens of thousands of squares of shingle roofing each year, along with a large volume of exterior renovation work across its multifamily and commercial portfolio: siding, windows, doors, decking, balconies, flat roofing, chimneys, and related building-envelope scopes. Because of that growth, the Owner/CEO is building out an upper-management layer and hiring Division Managers to take over the day-to-day field operations he runs today. This is not a Project Manager or Field Operations Manager role. You will run an entire construction division: its managers, workforce, production, resources, and operating results. You will learn the operation directly from the CEO, and his responsibilities will move to you as you take hold of the division, so he can focus on strategy and growth. We are hiring for more than one division, so we welcome candidates whose background is mainly in roofing, mainly in exterior renovation and building envelope, or both. You do not need deep experience in every trade the company performs. What You'll Do You will lead the people and systems that deliver the projects, rather than managing individual projects yourself.

  • Lead all levels of field management in your division, including Operations Managers, Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, and Assistant Project Managers.
  • Set performance expectations, hold managers accountable, and build a strong, stable management bench.
  • Own recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, discipline, and employee development for the division.
  • Drive workforce planning, labor allocation, subcontractor coordination, and staffing across multiple active projects.
  • Oversee production schedules, project planning, materials, equipment, and logistics.
  • Monitor labor efficiency, operating costs, budgets, and the factors that drive division profitability.
  • Make sure quality control, jobsite safety, project documentation, and billing readiness are handled consistently.
  • Find and fix operational problems before they affect production or need executive involvement.
  • Work with internal departments to improve coordination, communication, and efficiency.
  • Spot and develop employees who can move into leadership roles.
  • Put in place and improve operating procedures, training programs, and management systems.
  • Report to the CEO on division performance, staffing, challenges, and improvement opportunities.
  • Lead adoption of the company's technology, including construction management software, digital reporting, and proprietary office and field applications. Technology Is a Core Requirement The company is building its own operating system, CRM, and integrated field and office applications. You will be expected to use these systems well and to make sure your management team does too. Training on the proprietary tools is provided, but you need to arrive already comfortable with modern business technology, including:
  • Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Construction management software, project tracking systems, and digital reporting tools
  • iOS and Android devices and apps
  • Web-based platforms, cloud applications, CRMs, and dashboards You should be able to learn new software on your own and adapt quickly as the systems change. Field Involvement This is an upper-management role, but it stays connected to the field. You will visit active projects regularly, assess operational problems, support your managers, and take part in field training when needed. You must be comfortable traveling between jobsites, walking large projects, and getting onto roofs of varying pitch for training or evaluation. Frequent ladder climbing and daily roof access are not part of the job, but you need to be able and willing to do them when the situation calls for it.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • Substantial experience in construction leadership, construction management, or field operations
  • A track record of overseeing multiple projects and multiple management-level people at the same time
  • Experience recruiting, developing, and holding construction managers and field employees accountable
  • Strong grasp of production, scheduling, labor management, and resource allocation
  • Knowledge of roofing, exterior renovation, building envelope systems, or related trades
  • Working knowledge of construction budgets, labor costs, and project profitability
  • Sound independent judgment, with the ability to anticipate needs and balance competing priorities
  • Advanced computer skills (see above)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Flexibility to work the hours a high-volume construction operation requires
  • Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred, but not required Prior experience as a Division Manager, Construction Operations Manager, Director of Operations, or similar is preferred. We will also seriously consider Senior Project Managers, Construction Managers, and General Superintendents who have led other managers and run operations beyond a single project. Who Succeeds Here The right person knows the difference between managing projects and running an operation. They take ownership of results, hold people accountable, and are willing to make difficult personnel decisions. They think ahead and work proactively, and they understand how daily operational choices affect cost and margin. They can earn respect both on the jobsite and in the executive office, and they treat technology as a tool for running a better operation. Above all, they are willing to learn an established operation before changing it, and they want the long-term responsibility of leading a division in a company that is still growing.

  • Stable, privately held company with no private-equity ownership or exit timeline .
