Original job description

Consolidated Safety Services (CSS) has an opening for a Cloud Program Management Office (PMO) Paleo ARC Support position. The is a remote position based out of Beaumont, North Carolina.

Monitoring

  • Implement excess heat and cold metrics. Based on apparent temperature, these metrics will equip users with unified thermal stress information to improve hazard identification and risk assessments for public health, civil infrastructure, agricultural management, energy production, and other sectoral applications.
  • Implement a Global Reanalysis Air Mass Index (GRAMI). Rather than tracking a single parameter, GRAMI integrates temperature, moisture, pressure, winds, and clouds into a holistic depiction of the weather, such as hot/humid conditions or the passage of a cold front. GRAMI will provide valuable supporting context for NCEI Monthly Reports and will facilitate a variety of societal applications, such as retail trade (e.g., optimizing inventories based on air mass frequencies) and air quality (e.g., documenting stagnant air mass conditions that trap wildfire smoke). GRAMI was created by the same PIs who developed the excess heat and cold factor metrics.

Projections

  • Support a fledgling Projections Services Protocol (in conjunction with MAPP). This protocol will establish a standardized, tiered framework designed to bridge the operational gap between projection providers and downstream decision makers like civil engineers. Modeled on the success of the North American Multi-Model Ensemble and co-designed with end-users from the outset, the protocol will function as a quality-assurance pipeline that advances raw model output through a series of evaluation tiers that ultimately support stakeholder requirements. Given this project is at its initial stages and requires community input, specific deliverables will be defined during the performance period.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Development of an ERA5 ingest capability as well as an interactive web interface for real-time tracking
  • Implement a Global Reanalysis Air Mass Index (GRAMI)
  • Potential tasks may include setting up a process to acquire observational datasets and/or hourly model output (e.g., from GFDL) for product development, or the enhancement of an existing industry product (e.g., Future Typical Meteorological Year)

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent. Ten to fifteen (10-15) years of relevant experience. Duration of undergraduate or advanced degree time will be considered for experience.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Background in implementing end-to-end operational systems that ingest large amounts of input data, apply pre-processing and calculation algorithms, and make the data available for public access
  • Contribute design guidance and content for interactive web interface
  • Experience with developing end-to-end systems for generating derived products
  • Scientific background in atmospheric circulation patterns and upper-air observations
  • Experience with quality assessments of data, designing use-inspired products, and setting up prototype processes
