Overview
The Associate Manager AGI Research provides day-to-day supervision of research interns on the Technical Prospecting team and coordinates their work within priorities, project plans, evaluation methods, and technical standards established by the Director of AGI Research and technical leadership. The role assigns work, maintains schedules and workflow, monitors progress, coaches interns, addresses routine performance matters, and recommends actions when established processes do not fully address an operational issue. The role also performs hands-on research and prototyping activities and escalates material technical, scope, resource, and policy decisions to the appropriate leader.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate assigned intern research activities using priorities, research questions, roadmaps, delivery targets, and procedures established by technical leadership.
- Translate approved project objectives into individual assignments, weekly goals, and schedules for interns, and monitor progress at frequent intervals.
- Maintain current records of assignments, milestones, owners, risks, and dependencies; provide routine status reports and use judgment to identify and escalate issues that may affect delivery, compliance, or stakeholder commitments.
- Administer established planning and review routines, including cycle planning, weekly check-ins, milestone reviews, and demos.
- Assign work and maintain project-level schedules and milestones within the approved program plan; adjust day-to-day workflow when needed and escalate capacity constraints, material timeline risks, and proposed scope changes to technical leadership.
- Review project documentation and results for completeness, repeatability, and readiness for demonstration; evaluate available information and provide recommendations to technical leadership regarding whether work should be adopted, revised, or discontinued.
- Support the Director of AGI Research in refining assigned research questions and confirm that approved baselines, success measures, and acceptance criteria are documented before work begins.
- Apply and monitor established evaluation methods, approved test data, benchmarks, accuracy measures, and error-analysis practices; investigate exceptions and recommend process or method changes to technical leadership.
- Monitor compliance with established documentation and version-control requirements for code, prompts, data, and experiment logs, and resolve routine gaps with the assigned intern.
- Conduct targeted literature, tool, and vendor reviews using established criteria and summarize findings and operational recommendations for the Director and technical leads.
- Perform hands-on research, prototyping, coding, debugging, testing, and documentation using approved AI tools and established development practices.
- Conduct first-level reviews of intern code, prototypes, and documentation against established correctness, performance, security, maintainability, and AI-native SDLC standards; document findings, require routine corrections, and escalate material technical exceptions to technical leadership.
- Perform individual technical tasks related to the unit, such as creating a limited prototype, reproducing a result, building an evaluation aid, or resolving a routine blocker, while maintaining day-to-day supervisory responsibilities.
- Collect and document business and operational requirements from end users and sponsors using approved templates; clarify routine questions and obtain leadership approval for unclear requirements or material changes in scope or acceptance criteria.
- Coordinate technical reviews, document decisions and required actions, and monitor completion of feedback provided by technical leadership regarding APIs, services, and application architecture.
- Facilitate knowledge-sharing sessions on approved AI tools and techniques and recommend practical improvements to team procedures for leadership review.
- Provide input on intern selection, administer established onboarding activities, assign daily work based on approved project needs and demonstrated skills, and monitor schedules and workflow at frequent intervals.
- Hold regular 1:1s with each intern to review progress against assigned goals, resolve routine workflow issues, reinforce established expectations, and provide timely coaching and feedback.
- Administer the established intern performance process, document goals and progress, complete midpoint and end-of-internship evaluations, address routine performance issues, and elevate significant concerns with recommended action to the Director and HR.
- Coach interns on established AI-assisted development practices, research rigor, end-user engagement, and communication of technical trade-offs; reinforce a constructive environment for questions, learning, and documented experimentation.
- Coordinate established recruiting, onboarding, access, training, and offboarding processes with HR and university relations; provide documented performance input for internship and conversion decisions.
- Review and approve intern timecards, maintain required records, and resolve routine administrative exceptions in accordance with company policy.
- Coordinate with the Director of AGI Research, technical leads, engineering, data science, and business stakeholders to keep assigned intern work aligned with approved priorities; communicate status and evaluate and explain operational risks and technical trade-offs to support leadership decisions.
- Monitor intern compliance with security, privacy, and data-handling policies; investigate routine exceptions, take corrective action within established procedures, and escalate material concerns.
- Maintain project templates, onboarding materials, standard operating procedures, and the research archive; identify recurring process gaps and recommend practical updates to leadership.
- Hire, develop, coach, lead and retain top-tier talent, with a focus on building and improving a team and culture that is able to assist in employing best in class practices to support and drive high levels of internal and external customer satisfaction.
- Complete all responsibilities as outlined in the annual performance review and/or goal setting.
- Complete all special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Must be able to perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
