Role Purpose
Join our team to shape the future of precision manufacturing automation. We are seeking a hands-on Mechatronics Engineer to design, develop, integrate, and deploy advanced automation systems for manufacturing applications. In this role, you will work across mechanical design, robotics, sensing, controls, software, and system integration to turn complex manufacturing challenges into reliable, scalable automation solutions.
This is an opportunity to drive high-impact technical work from early concept development and simulation through commissioning and performance optimization. You will work in a highly collaborative environment with multidisciplinary engineering teams, integrators, and manufacturing personnel. Your work will directly improve process capability, quality, throughput, and reliability.
Project work for this position will primarily be in Hickory, Metro Charlotte and other Corning locations in North Carolina.
Why Join Us
- Work on technically challenging, high-visibility automation and equipment integration projects with real production impact.
- Take ownership of project execution from concept through deployment.
- Collaborate with engineers across mechanical design, controls, robotics, software, and manufacturing.
- Grow technical leadership skills through direct stakeholder engagement and complex system integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement mechatronic systems that improve manufacturing automation, precision, reliability, and productivity.
- Partner with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to define automation requirements, develop project plans, and translate operational needs into practical technical solutions.
- Integrate mechanical systems, actuators, sensors, motion-control hardware, machine vision, control systems, and industrial robots into robust automation equipment.
- Develop and apply system models, simulations, and engineering analyses to validate designs and optimize system performance.
- Develop control, optimization, and automation software for robotic and mechatronic systems.
- Troubleshoot complex system-level issues using structured data analysis and sound engineering principles.
- Support system commissioning, acceptance testing, deployment, and continuous improvement in manufacturing environments.
- Create clear technical documentation, design records, progress updates, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide technical support and training to manufacturing teams on the operation, maintenance, and safe use of automation systems.
- Stay current with emerging technologies in robotics, automation, controls, sensing, and precision engineering - and bring new ideas into project work.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering, or related degree with a focus on automation including robotic and control systems
- Minimum 5 yrs. experience designing and implementing mechatronic systems involving a combination of mechanical, electrical/hardware, controls, and software elements.
- Experience with robotic systems, including robot kinematics, dynamics, motion planning, and/or control algorithms.
- Ability to design and optimize mechanical components and assemblies using CAD tools.
- Experience with machine-vision systems and image-processing techniques.
- Programming experience in one or more of C, C++, Python, and MATLAB.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and systems-thinking skills.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- A detail-oriented approach to engineering quality, safety, documentation, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary, project-based teams.
- 50% travel primarily to local project sites with occasional planned overnight trips, including international, to support vendor engagement, FATs, SATs, and commissioning.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Experience integrating sensors, instrumentation, and data-acquisition systems.
- Experience with modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or LabVIEW.
- Experience with industrial automation technologies, including PLC programming, HMIs, SCADA, motion control, and industrial communications.
- Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, or real-time control software.
- Experience supporting automation equipment through commissioning, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, or production deployment.
