Position Overview:
The Machinist supports production and facility equipment by building, modifying, repairing, and maintaining precision mechanical components, molds, tooling, jigs, fixtures, and related equipment. This position works independently from engineering drawings, sketches, and verbal or written instructions to perform a broad range of machining operations while maintaining precise mechanical tolerances.
The Machinist applies advanced knowledge of machining practices, materials, injection molding processes, and precision measurement to troubleshoot and resolve mold- and equipment-related issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up, operate, and maintain a variety of manual, CNC, and hand-operated machine tools.
- Perform machining operations including milling, turning, facing, boring, grooving, contouring, dovetailing, drilling, tapping, grinding, and polishing to precise tolerances.
- Construct, modify, repair, and maintain complex molds and mold components used in precision injection molding operations.
- Assemble completed molds and perform functional testing; identify and make necessary modifications or repairs.
- Interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, specifications, and general work instructions.
- Lay out work for molds, mold components, jigs, fixtures, and other tooling.
- Determine dimensions, component arrangement, venting requirements, and related design considerations using available product and process information.
- Apply algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate angles, hole locations, dimensions, and machining requirements.
- Set up and operate CNC equipment; select appropriate materials, machining methods, tooling, and sequence of operations.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, feeds, coolants, and machining techniques based on material properties and hot-manifold injection molding process requirements.
- Use hand tools, hand-polishing equipment, and other finishing methods to produce details that cannot be effectively machined.
- Grind, sharpen, and maintain cutting tools as required.
- Operate polishing equipment to achieve finishes as fine as 1/2 micron, where required.
- Perform welding, soldering, heat-treating, and related repair processes as needed.
- Troubleshoot molds in production to determine the source of mold-related defects and make appropriate corrections.
- Modify mold flow patterns, pin locations, vent locations, and related features while considering factors such as flow rates, flash dimensions, material shrinkage, and part quality.
- Repair and maintain precision measuring instruments as assigned.
- Follow all company safety practices, quality standards, operating procedures, and housekeeping requirements.
- Once trained, provide instruction and on-the-job training to other employees within the toolroom group as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Machinist Journeyman status;
- Four years of applicable machinist, toolroom, mold-making, or related experience;
- Military equivalent training and experience; or
- Minimum two-year degree in Machine Tool Technology or a closely related field.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to independently set up and operate manual and CNC machining equipment.
- Strong knowledge of machining practices, cutting tools, tooling selection, speeds, feeds, coolants, and material properties.
- Experience with mold construction, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret detailed blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications.
- Proficiency using precision measuring equipment and maintaining tight mechanical tolerances.
- Working knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as applied to machining.
- Experience with grinding, polishing, welding, soldering, and heat-treating processes.
- Knowledge of injection molding processes, including hot-manifold systems, is preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and quality focus.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and effectively communicate technical information to team members.
Physical Requirements:
- Successful completion of a physical assessment is required.
- A practical machining assessment may be required as part of the selection process.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to safely work around machinery, cutting tools, coolants, welding equipment, and other manufacturing hazards while using required personal protective equipment.
Working Conditions:
This position works primarily in a manufacturing and toolroom environment and may involve exposure to moving machinery, noise, metal chips, oils, coolants, heat, and other conditions typical of machining and injection molding operations.
Compensation:
Compensation for this position is $37.67 per hour, paid in accordance with the company’s regular payroll schedule. The machinist is eligible for overtime compensation as required by applicable law and company policy and may also be eligible for applicable shift differentials, incentives, benefits, and other compensation programs in accordance with company policy.
This position does not support immigration sponsorship.
