Role Purpose
We are seeking a motivated Summer Intern to support the development of haptic metrology methods and tools for stylus-enabled tablet applications. This rotational internship provides hands-on exposure to the interdisciplinary work involved in evaluating, measuring, and improving stylus haptic experiences. The intern will collaborate with engineering, product, research, and quality teams to help characterize haptic performance, develop repeatable measurement approaches, analyze test data, and translate findings into recommendations for product development. This role is well suited to a student interested in hardware, sensing, human-computer interaction, mechanical or electrical engineering, embedded systems, or experimental measurement.
Program Perks:
- Competitive salaries
- Assistance with housing and travel
- Meaningful project and final project presentation
Intern Activities:
- Social and networking opportunities
- Weekly tech talks
- Community involvement
Key Responsibilities
- Support development and validation of metrology methods for measuring haptic performance in stylus and tablet systems.
- Assist with test setup design, fixture development, calibration, and documentation of measurement procedures.
- Conduct repeatable experiments to evaluate variables such as vibration, force, latency, frequency response, contact behavior, pressure sensitivity, and user-perceived haptic quality.
- Collect, clean, analyze, and visualize experimental data; identify trends, variation, and potential sources of error.
- Help define performance metrics, test protocols, acceptance criteria, and reporting formats for haptic features.
- Collaborate with hardware, firmware, software, mechanical, UX research, and quality teams to understand product requirements and test results.
- Investigate measurement equipment, sensors, data-acquisition tools, and industry practices relevant to haptic characterization.
- Support root-cause investigations for performance issues and help propose improvements to test methods, designs, or processes.
- Maintain organized lab records, test reports, experiment logs, and technical presentations.
- Participate in professional-development programming and present a final project summary to technical stakeholders.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Robotics, Human-Computer Interaction, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
- Interest in haptics, sensing, precision measurement, stylus input, consumer electronics, or human-device interaction.
- Familiarity with experimental methods, data collection, and basic statistical analysis.
- Experience with one or more of the following is preferred: Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Excel, data visualization, signal processing, microcontrollers, sensors, or data-acquisition systems.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, test plans, specifications, and engineering documentation is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and a commitment to measurement repeatability.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively on a cross-functional team.
- Ability to work safely and responsibly in a laboratory or prototyping environment.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Coursework or projects involving vibrations, controls, mechatronics, instrumentation, signal processing, embedded systems, or human factors.
- Familiarity with accelerometers, force sensors, strain gauges, oscilloscopes, motion measurement, or other test instrumentation.
- Experience building prototypes, test fixtures, scripts, or automated data-analysis workflows.
- Experience conducting user studies or evaluating subjective product experiences is beneficial.
