Original job description
Coreshell's metallurgical Silicon anode technology delivers high capacity, fast-charging, and superior safety. Our low-cost liquid-phase nano-coating addresses critical electrode-surface degradation issues and enables batteries with a Silicon-dominant anode that have higher energy density, superior intrinsic thermal safety, and significantly lower cost/kWh compared to current LIBs. Our Si anode material is lower than the cost of graphite and 100% domestically sourced. We strive to transform the global automotive market by enabling low-cost and long-range EVs as a first step towards net-zero sustainability in the near future. Position: Coreshell is building a 2 GWh electrode and battery cell manufacturing facility, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) award. The Project Manager, Facilities and Infrastructure is Coreshell’s day-to-day project lead for the building, utility and infrastructure scope of that facility. You will coordinate the engineering and design-build firms, equipment suppliers, landlord, utilities and permitting authorities, and you will carry the utility engineering work that ties the manufacturing equipment to the building: the utility matrix and load basis, the tie-in definitions, and the review of contractor and vendor deliverables against them. You will report to the Senior Director of Engineering, work within a small engineering team, and work closely with the manufacturing and equipment teams under the Chief Manufacturing Officer. This is a hands-on role with no staff under it at the start; it grows with the program as the project moves into construction. Coreshell is moving quickly, and the partners on this project are large national engineering and design-build firms, equipment suppliers in Korea and the United States, municipal utilities and a federal program office. The person who does well here is comfortable working in small and big organizations.
Core Responsibilities:
Contractor and Partner Coordination
- Act as Coreshell’s day-to-day contact for the engineering, design-build and construction firms on the project: weekly cadence, action logs, RFIs and deliverable reviews. Keep the scope split between Coreshell, the design firm, the builder, the landlord and the equipment suppliers written down and current.
- Maintain the owner’s information package (design basis, utility matrix, layouts, equipment data) so that every bidder and partner works from the same revision, and run document control for the project.
- Support contractor selection: assemble scopes of work, normalize proposals so they compare like for like, and prepare recommendations for management with the Senior Director of Engineering.
Utility Engineering and Equipment Integration
- Own the plant utility matrix and load basis: electrical power, compressed air, nitrogen, chilled and process cooling water, HVAC and dehumidification, process exhaust and solvent recovery, DI water and natural gas. Reconcile vendor utility data to the design basis and keep the matrix current as equipment selections firm up.
- Define utility tie-in points and interface requirements between the process equipment (electrode mixing and coating, calendering and slitting, dry rooms, cell assembly, formation and aging) and the building systems. Review vendor utility requirements and installation drawings and raise conflicts before they reach the field.
- Support dry room scope definition and procurement with the dry room supplier and the design-build partner: dew point zones, air changes, make-up air, dehumidifier capacity and heat rejection, each checked against the design basis.
- Coordinate utility service applications and technical exchanges with the electric, gas and water utilities (load letters, phasing, energization schedule) with the Senior Director of Engineering.
Permitting, Code and Funding Compliance
- Coordinate the permit path with the design firm, EHS and the authorities having jurisdiction: building, fire, air district, hazardous materials and utility permits. Track submittals, comments and approvals, and keep the permit schedule tied to the construction schedule.
- Keep the facility scope aligned with code and life safety requirements for solvent handling, flammable storage and lithium-ion manufacturing areas (California Building and Fire Codes, NFPA, Cal/OSHA), working with EHS and the engineers of record.
- Support DOE award requirements for the facility scope: milestone tracking, schedule and cost reporting into the project’s earned value system, and the flow-down of Buy America and prevailing wage requirements to contractors.
Schedule, Cost and Reporting
- Build and maintain the integrated facility schedule (design, permitting, long-lead procurement, construction, equipment delivery, installation and commissioning) and the facility capital cost tracker. Report variances early, with a proposed recovery.
- Run change control: log scope changes, have them priced by the contractors, and route them for approval.
- Write short, clear status for engineering leadership and the executive team: what changed, what is at risk, and which decisions are needed.
Construction, Installation and Commissioning
- Be on site through construction, equipment hook-up and commissioning. Walk the work, close out field questions, and coordinate between trades, equipment suppliers and Coreshell’s operations team.
- Plan mechanical completion, utility commissioning and handover to operations, including punch lists, turnover documentation and as-built records.
- Support capital and infrastructure projects at the existing San Leandro site as needed.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Civil Engineering.
- UL Certification preferred.
Experience:
- 8 or more years in industrial capital projects (facility design, construction or utility infrastructure) for manufacturing, including at least 3 years as an owner’s project engineer or project manager, or in an equivalent EPC or design-build project role.
- Has coordinated design firms and general or design-build contractors on at least one industrial project from design through construction and startup. Experience in installation of battery manufacturing equipment is a plus.
- Working knowledge of industrial utility systems: 480 V electrical distribution, compressed air, nitrogen, chilled and process cooling water, HVAC and dehumidification, process exhaust. Reads and checks one-line diagrams, P&IDs, utility matrices and MEP drawings.
- Experience with US permitting for industrial facilities (building, fire, air, hazardous materials) and with the day-to-day interface to the authorities having jurisdiction.
- Builds and maintains project schedules (Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project), cost trackers and change logs, and writes meeting notes, action logs and status reports that others act on.
- Able to work onsite in San Leandro and at the new facility site, with occasional travel to contractor and supplier locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Battery factory deployment experience in the United States.
- Dry room, cleanroom or other controlled-environment construction.
- Solvent (NMP) handling, recovery and exhaust systems, or other chemical process facility experience.
- Federally funded projects (DOE or similar), including earned value reporting, Buy America and Davis-Bacon requirements.
- Bay Area regulatory environment: BAAQMD, Cal/OSHA, Title 24 and local fire departments.
- Experience with overseas equipment suppliers (Korea, Japan, China, Europe) where documentation is partial or translated.
- PE, PMP or CCM.
Work Style and Fit:
- Hands on with the day to day: writes the notes, checks the drawings, walks the site.
- Brings problems forward early, with a proposed fix and the information needed to decide, and keeps the record straight when the basis changes.
- Works as easily with a large engineering firm, a municipal utility or a federal program office as with a small team, and matches the formality each one needs.
- Patient and precise across cultures and time zones; many of our equipment partners are in Korea.
Benefits & Location: San Leandro, CA. Full-time, onsite, with regular time at the new facility site. Salary range of $120,000 to $160,000 with stock incentives.
