Original job description
ABOUT CODE METAL
Code Metal is the leader in automated software engineering you can trust. As AI writes more of the world's code, the bottleneck in software has shifted from writing code to verifying it works, and AI cannot verify its own work with certainty. Code Metal takes a fundamentally different approach: constrain AI to what it does reliably, verify every step independently of the model using formal methods, and keep engineers in the loop on the decisions that matter. The result isn't code that probably works - it's code that is provably correct, with auditable proof. Customers including the U.S. Air Force, L3Harris, RTX, and Toshiba use Code Metal to modernize legacy code, optimize performance on real hardware, and move prototypes to production, fast. Founded in 2023 with offices in Boston and San Francisco, Code Metal is funded by Accel, Salesforce Ventures, B Capital, Smith Point Capital, J2 Ventures, Shield Capital, Overmatch, RTX, and others. ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Controller is a foundational hire to help build out our core Finance team. You will own the accuracy, compliance, and scalability of Code Metal’s financial operations across business, including commercial software contracts and government contracts of varying types. This is a hands-on role. You’ll start in the general ledger, own core processes such as close, evolve accounting policies and controls, and build the team and systems as we scale. You will report to the Head of Finance and partner closely with finance, contracts, people ops, and more.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Close & Reporting:
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close for all entities, including consolidation and inter-company.
- Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements and management reporting packages for leadership and the board.
- Own revenue recognition under ASC 606 across software, services, and government contracts (FFP, T&M, cost-type).
Government Contract Accounting & Compliance:
- Maintain an accounting system that meets DCAA standards, covering timekeeping, labor distribution, job costing, and segregation of unallowable costs.
- Support definition of indirect rate structures (fringe, overhead, G&A), provisional billing rates, and incurred cost submissions.
- Support pricing, proposals, billing, and readiness for government audits, in partnership with contracts and BD.
Controls, Policy & Audit:
- Design and document accounting policies and internal controls that scale with the business.
- Lead the annual external audit and serve as the primary point of contact for auditors.
- Own technical accounting, including stock compensation, capitalized software, commission capitalization, and M&A purchase accounting.
Cash Operations:
- Execute cash management, bank reconciliations, AP/AR, and payroll accounting within our treasury policy.
Team & Systems:
- Transition work from our external accounting provider and integrate acquired-entity accounting onto a unified platform.
- Lead the evaluation and implementation of accounting and ERP systems suited to commercial and government contracting needs.
- Build and lead the accounting team over time.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including controller- or assistant controller-level ownership.
- CPA required.
- Hands-on experience with government contract accounting, including DCAA, FAR Part 31, indirect rates, and incurred cost submissions strongly preferred.
- Experience leading external audits and building close processes and controls from early stage.
- Working knowledge of ASC 606 for software and multi-element arrangements; M&A integration experience a plus.
- Comfort being hands-on in a fast-moving environment while building for scale.
BENEFITS
- Pay depends on experience, but we strive to be at the upper end of the salary range
- Health care plan with 100% premium coverage, including medical, dental, and vision
- 401k with 5% matching
- Paid Time Off (uncapped vacation, plus sick and public holidays)
- Flexible hybrid or remote work arrangement

Wage Transparency - The salary range for this role is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as the final offer amount may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, individual proficiency, skills, experience, and location.
