Original job description

As a Senior Java Backend Engineer at Citi, you will design and build high-performance, scalable data processing applications that support critical business operations. Working within the Spring ecosystem, you will apply AI-assisted development tools and prompt engineering techniques to accelerate delivery and strengthen code quality across the development lifecycle. This role sits within a technology team responsible for building resilient backend systems that manage and process data at scale.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain high-performance backend services for scalable data processing applications using Java and Spring.
Architect efficient data processing solutions that handle intensive calculations and complex business logic at scale.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and deliver new product features.
Optimize backend application performance, quality, and responsiveness across the platform.
Diagnose system bottlenecks and bugs, then implement resilient, long-term solutions.
Apply Test-Driven Development practices to strengthen testability, modularity, and test coverage.
Optimize SQL queries, data joins, and large-scale data pipelines to support reliable data processing.
Apply AI-assisted development tools and prompt engineering techniques to accelerate delivery and improve code quality.

Required Qualifications & Skills

6+ years of hands-on experience building Java backend applications (Java 17+), backed by a Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
Proficiency in the Spring Framework, including Spring Boot, Spring Data, and Spring Cloud.
Strong knowledge of SQL and relational or NoSQL database management, with experience optimizing queries and data models.
Understanding of in-memory data loading techniques and efficient data joining strategies for large-scale pipelines.
Knowledge of Java build tools such as Maven or Gradle, testing frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito, and dependency management.
Experience applying design patterns and architectural principles such as microservices and event-driven architecture, using Test-Driven Development and tools such as SonarQube to maintain code quality.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Familiarity with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes or OpenShift.
Knowledge of distributed data processing frameworks such as Apache Spark or Apache Flink.
Master's degree in a relevant technical field.

What We Offer

Join a technology team where your engineering decisions directly shape how Citi processes and manages data at scale, within a hybrid working model that balances collaboration and flexibility.

Work in a hybrid model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely each week.
Take ownership of complex backend systems and influence technical direction within the team.
Build expertise in AI-assisted development tools and apply them to real engineering problems.
Access structured learning and development programs to grow your technical skills.
Collaborate with engineering teams across Citi's global technology network.
Benefit from financial wellbeing resources that support long-term planning.
Access wellbeing support designed to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.
