Original job description

Controller Location: Keller, Texas Compensation: $135,000 - $155,000 Benefits: 401(k) with employer match, paid time off that increases with tenure, paid holidays, and year-end bonus

About the Opportunity

We are partnering with an established luxury custom homebuilding company to identify a hands-on Controller to lead its accounting, financial reporting, payroll, and treasury operations. This is an opportunity to work directly with ownership in a growing, family-oriented business with multiple affiliated entities and an active portfolio of high-end residential construction projects.

The ideal candidate combines strong construction accounting knowledge with a proactive, technology-minded approach to improving financial processes, reporting, and operational efficiency. This person will take ownership of the company's financial operations while serving as a trusted advisor to leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting and financial reporting across multiple legal entities, including monthly and year-end close, general ledger, reconciliations, and consolidated financial statements.
  • Manage construction accounting, job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, budget-versus-actual reporting, and project profitability analysis.
  • Prepare construction loan draws and maintain relationships with banks, lenders, title companies, and other financial partners.
  • Oversee cash flow forecasting, treasury management, banking activities, and construction financing.
  • Manage accounts payable, company credit cards, vendor invoices, payment workflows, and paperless billing and autopay processes.
  • Oversee payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, employee records, new-hire paperwork, wage changes, and PTO tracking.
  • Administer the company's 401(k) plan, including employee contributions, employer matching, profit-sharing contributions, and compliance requirements.
  • Support rental property accounting, including property-level reporting, rent receipts, vendor payments, mortgage schedules, and property expenses.
  • Coordinate with external CPA firms on tax preparation, audits, and financial reviews.
  • Oversee insurance, bonding, and financial risk management in partnership with ownership and the property management team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting systems, automate workflows, strengthen internal controls, and enhance financial reporting.
  • Supervise accounting and payroll personnel while providing financial insight and recommendations to ownership.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within residential construction, custom homebuilding, or a related industry.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, job costing, WIP schedules, project budgets, and construction loan draws.
  • Experience managing multiple legal entities, intercompany transactions, and consolidated financial reporting.
  • Hands-on knowledge of payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, and 401(k) administration.
  • Experience with cash flow management, financial forecasting, and banking or lender relationships.
  • Familiarity with rental property or real estate accounting is a plus.
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Enterprise Desktop and Microsoft Excel; experience with construction accounting platforms such as Adaptive is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • A process-oriented mindset with an interest in technology, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and communicate effectively with ownership and external financial partners.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred; CPA designation is a plus.

If you are a construction accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership, improving systems, and helping a growing business make informed financial decisions, we would love to connect with you.
