Original job description
Who we are looking for
We are looking for a senior, hands-on software engineer and technical leader to lead the development and continued evolution of the Charles River Self Service Portal (SSP).
The successful candidate will combine deep full-stack engineering expertise with strong technical leadership. This role will contribute directly to architecture, design, and development while providing technical direction, mentoring engineers, and collaborating across teams to deliver secure, scalable, maintainable, and high-quality solutions.
Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on technical leadership for the SSP engineering team, contributing directly to architecture, design, development, code reviews, testing, troubleshooting, and delivery.
- Design, develop, test, and implement full-stack solutions using Java, Spring/Spring Boot, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, REST APIs, SQL, and related technologies.
- Drive the architecture and evolution of cloud-hosted, microservices-based applications, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient, secure, observable, and maintainable.
- Provide technical direction for SSP while ensuring alignment with broader Charles River architecture, engineering standards, and platform strategy.
- Collaborate with Product Owners, QA engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to refine requirements, assess technical feasibility, identify dependencies, and translate business needs into effective technical solutions.
- Lead technical analysis and problem solving for complex development and production issues across application, integration, database, infrastructure, and cloud components.
- Promote strong engineering practices through architecture and code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, secure development, operational readiness, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate with other engineering and platform teams on cross-team dependencies, integrations, technical changes, risks, and delivery activities.
- Mentor engineers and strengthen the technical capabilities of the geographically distributed team through coaching, design discussions, code reviews, knowledge sharing, onboarding, and hands-on collaboration.
- Participate actively in the agile development process, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, standups, retrospectives, and other team ceremonies.
Experience
- A minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible professional software engineering experience, including significant experience independently designing and delivering complex enterprise software solutions.
- Strong hands-on experience developing full-stack web applications, with demonstrated expertise in Java and Spring/Spring Boot and modern front-end development preferably using React.
- Strong experience designing and developing REST APIs, microservices, and distributed systems, including service integration, resiliency, scalability, and troubleshooting.
- Experience developing and operating applications in a cloud environment, preferably Microsoft Azure, using technologies such as containers, Kubernetes/AKS, and cloud-native application services.
- Strong experience with relational databases and SQL, preferably SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL.
- Experience with automated testing practices, including unit, integration, API, and UI testing.
- Experience with CI/CD and modern DevOps practices, including automated build, test, and deployment pipelines.
- Experience with application observability and production troubleshooting, including logging, metrics, tracing, and monitoring technologies such as Dynatrace, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage technical complexity and drive toward pragmatic, sustainable solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A minimum of 5 years working within an Agile development methodology is strongly desired.
- Experience developing software within financial services or another complex enterprise environment is strongly desired.
Education and preferred qualifications B.S. degree (or foreign education equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or another technical course of study required. M.S. degree strongly preferred.
