Original job description

Department: Engineering Work Location: United States / Canada Employment Type: Full-Time; Exempt Design What Powers the Future: Build it -Design it – Improve it At CMI, engineering goes beyond creating drawings. You’ll work directly with manufacturing, testing, quality, to solve problems, improve designs, troubleshoot issues, and turn engineering concepts into products that perform in the real world. We’re particularly interested in experienced mechanical engineers with hands-on knowledge of sheet-metal design and welded fabrications. Engineers who understand how material selection, bend allowances, welds, tolerances, joints, and manufacturing processes affect the final product.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

Design and develop mechanical Parts and assemblies for distribution transformers.
Solve real manufacturing and design challenges and see your solutions put into action.
Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing teams, quality, and testing.
Improve existing products and processes while contributing to new product development.
Get hands-on experience to how engineered products are built, tested, and improved.
Grow your technical expertise as our products, processes, technology, and engineering capabilities continue to evolve.

If you’re the kind of engineer who enjoys designing, troubleshooting, asking “how can we make this better?” and seeing your work become a finished product, we’d like to hear from you. Bring your engineering skills. Bring your curiosity. Help us build what’s next. Design & Develop

Develop mechanical designs for distribution transformers including tank, core-coil frame assemblies, cooling systems, lifting/handling features, etc. as needed for custom and non-standard configurations.
Perform mechanical calculations such as structural strength for short circuit forces, thermal performance, and tolerance stack-ups.
Verify bushing locations, terminal clearances and overall component and accessory layouts.
Utilize engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Solid Edge, or proprietary transformer design tools) for mechanical design, modeling and analysis.
Prepare and review manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and 3D CAD models.

Standards and Compliance:

Interpret and apply relevant industry standards (e.g., IEEE, ASTM and CSA) to ensure compliance.
Participate in design reviews, technical discussions with customers, and root cause analysis of production or issues.
Contribute to standardization of transformer designs and development of design tools, templates, and best practices.
Stay updated on evolving industry standards, participating in industrial committees and technical events as required.
Support certification and testing requirements such as pressure/rupture/vacuum testing, tamper proof/enclosure integrity testing, dielectric, short circuit and arc fault testing, and thermal performance validation.

Collaborate Across the Business:

Collaborate with manufacturing, test, and quality teams to resolve non-conformances, implement engineering changes, and validate design improvements.
Provide technical support to manufacturing and assembly teams, including weld specifications, component/material selection, and fit-up requirements to optimize transformer performance, efficiency, and cost.
Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance departmental efficiencies and output quality, supporting prototype builds, production, and customer testing as required
Participate, as required, in product development and improvement initiatives to maintain market competitiveness of company products and solutions.

What You Bring We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer with strong design and problem-solving capabilities for sheet-metal design and welded fabrications. Experience specifically with transformers or electrical distribution equipment is beneficial, but it is not required. · Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering field. · Experience developing mechanical designs from concept through manufacturing. · Proficiency with CAD and engineering design tools.
