Original job description

This open position is on the Embedded Software team under the Research and Development organization of Checkpoint Systems.

The Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and enhancing automated test frameworks and end-to-end test coverage for software that runs on Checkpoint’s embedded Linux-based devices, including RFID readers and edge computing platforms.

The ideal candidate will work across the full device software stack - covering embedded Linux services, Python-based microservices (REST APIs, MQTT protocols, device-to-cloud communication) and on-device UI workflows for device management, diagnostics, and configuration - and will ensure the platform is validated through reliable, repeatable, and scalable automated testing.

In this position, the candidate will collaborate daily with software engineers, firmware engineers, architects, QA, Field Service, Manufacturing, Product Management, and Compliance to define test strategies, harden release quality, and improve defect prevention and detection across integration points (hardware drivers/sensors, networking, cloud connectivity, and UI workflows).

Other requirements for this position include strong communication skills, ownership of quality outcomes, the ability to troubleshoot complex system interactions, and openness to learning new tools, technologies, and frameworks.

The SDET reports to the Embedded Software Manager.

Job Duties

  • Develop and maintain test automation frameworks for embedded Linux devices and supporting services (Python and/or other scripting languages).
  • Build and maintain end-to-end automated tests for device workflows, including on-device UI, configuration flows, diagnostics tools, and device management features.
  • Preferred automation tool: Playwright (Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript). Experience with Selenium or another mature UI automation tool is acceptable if the candidate can ramp quickly to Playwright.
  • Implement and maintain API-level automated tests for REST APIs used by local microservices, UI, and cloud services, including contract/compatibility validation across versions.
  • Implement automated validation for MQTT-based message flows and device-to-cloud communication patterns (topic structure, payload validation, error handling, retry behavior).
  • Partner with firmware teams to validate hardware-level interfaces and integration points (RFID workflows, GPIO, drivers, networking behaviors, provisioning/commissioning flows).
  • Design and execute integration, regression, and system-level test plans appropriate for embedded environments (including test environments with real hardware, simulators, or mixed setups).
  • Improve testability of the platform by working with engineers to add logging hooks, observability, stable APIs, and deterministic behaviors that enable automation.
  • Enhance device telemetry/logging validation and service observability checks to support QA and Field Service diagnostics and faster triage of issues.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and define quality gates (smoke, regression tiers, flake management, and reporting).
  • Participate in peer reviews for test code and (when applicable) production code; provide constructive, actionable feedback to improve quality and maintainability.
  • Document test frameworks, test environment setup, test data strategies, known limitations, and troubleshooting guides for repeatable execution.
  • Collaborate with Field Service to reproduce real-world issues and convert high-value field scenarios into automated regression coverage (network flows, hardware interactions, upgrade/rollback scenarios).
  • Support Manufacturing and Operations teams by validating provisioning, configuration, and upgrade flows for embedded devices through repeatable automated checks.
  • Provide task estimates, track progress, communicate risks, and deliver test automation work reliably within sprint timelines.
  • Ready and willing to learn and work on new languages, tool chains, frameworks, and platforms as product needs evolve.

Education

  • 5+ years in software test automation / SDET / software engineering with a strong automation focus.
  • 2+ years working with one or more of the following is a strong plus: embedded Linux systems, IoT devices, hardware-integrated software, device management systems, or field-deployed device

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSA's)

Mandatory

  • Strong experience building and maintaining automated test suites (UI + API + integration) and improving coverage over time.
  • Hands-on proficiency with Playwright (preferred) or demonstrated success with Selenium/equivalent UI automation framework and ability to transition quickly.
  • Strong Linux experience (shell tools, networking basics, permissions, troubleshooting on-device issues).
  • Experience testing microservices, REST APIs, and service-to-service workflows; understanding of common failure modes (timeouts, retries, dependency health).
  • Experience testing MQTT or message-based systems and validating message schemas, topics, and end-to-end flows.
  • Proficiency in Python (or willingness to learn rapidly) for automation, tooling, and test harness development.
  • Experience with Git or equivalent version control.
  • Strong debugging skills across software/hardware interactions and the ability to isolate issues in complex systems.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with engineering, QA, Field Service, and Product stakeholders; ability to document procedures and results.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Experience with embedded Linux services, system, and service orchestration; ability to validate startup dependencies and service health behaviors.
  • Experience with CI/CD and automated quality gates (e.g., GitHub Actions / Azure Pipelines) and test reporting/triage practices.
  • Experience with device upgrade/OTA, provisioning/commissioning workflows, and validating rollback/recovery behaviors.
  • Familiarity with RFID systems, IoT devices, or sensor integration and testing hardware-in-the-loop scenarios.
  • Cloud integration testing experience (Azure preferred) and ability to validate device-to-cloud telemetry and service connectivity.
  • Familiarity with security testing concepts (SAST/DAST/SCA awareness) and testing in regulated/compliance-oriented environments.
  • Experience creating test utilities in additional languages (TypeScript/JavaScript, Bash, Go, or Rust).
