Original job description

At Casey's, everyday interactions across our stores, digital experiences, fuel operations, supply chain, merchandising, marketing, and corporate functions generate data that can improve how the business operates and serves its guests. Marketplace Data Engineering transforms that data into governed, reliable data products used for reporting, analytics, data science, AI, and operational decision-making.

We are looking for an Associate Data Engineer who is curious, collaborative, and motivated to grow as an engineer. You will pair with experienced team members to develop data pipelines and models, test and deploy changes, troubleshoot production issues, and learn the standards behind Casey's Enterprise Data Lake. You will work with Databricks, Python, SQL, cloud services, Git-based delivery practices, and approved AI-assisted engineering tools while building practical knowledge of Casey's business and data ecosystem.

The Associate Data Engineer contributes to the design, development, testing, deployment, and support of governed data products on Casey's Enterprise Data Lake. Working with more experienced engineers, product partners, analysts, and business stakeholders, this role develops reliable data pipelines and models using Databricks, Python, SQL, and related cloud technologies. The role learns and applies Casey's engineering, security, data governance, and software-delivery standards while helping troubleshoot production issues and continuously improve the reliability, quality, performance, and maintainability of Marketplace data products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, test, deploy, and maintain end-to-end data pipelines and data products using Databricks, Python, SQL, and approved enterprise frameworks.
  • Evaluate source systems and work with engineers, analysts, product partners, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements, dependencies, and intended business use.
  • Contribute to data models across Raw, Protected, and Purpose zones in accordance with Casey's Enterprise Data Lake architecture, naming conventions, and governance standards.
  • Write maintainable, reusable, and well-documented code using version control, branching, pull requests, peer review, and CI/CD practices.
  • Create and maintain automated tests and validation processes covering data accuracy, completeness, schema, business rules, and pipeline behavior.
  • Participate in deployment and release activities across development and production environments using approved service identities and access-management practices.
  • Monitor data jobs and pipelines, investigate failures and data-quality issues, document findings, and partner with senior engineers or Operations to restore service.
  • Assist with performance and cost optimization for Databricks jobs, queries, pipelines, and compute resources.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, operating procedures, support information, and data lineage.
  • Collaborate with Analytics Solutions, Data Science, Enterprise Data & Governance, Operations, product partners, and business teams to deliver trusted data for reporting, analytics, AI, and operational use cases.
  • Use approved AI-assisted development tools to accelerate learning, coding, testing, documentation, and troubleshooting while validating outputs and following security and responsible-use standards.
  • Participate in the team's on-call or off-hours support rotation based on the criticality of supported data products.
  • Continuously build knowledge of Casey's business domains, data architecture, engineering standards, and software-delivery practices through pairing, feedback, and structured learning.

Compensation: Starting pay range: $66,000 - $90,800. Actual pay may vary based on Casey’s assessment of the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, and qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include local prevailing wages and internal equity. This position is eligible for an annual cash bonus based on company performance. Our full salary range for this role does extend beyond the hiring range listed, allowing team members the opportunity to continue to grow within the company.

  • This position requires authorization to work in the U.S. without the need for employment-based immigration sponsorship now or in the future. Casey’s will not provide sponsorship or employer support for applications or petitions for F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, H-1B, L-1, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, J-1, or any other employment-based visa.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Data Analytics, Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent years of related work experience.
  • Experience using SQL or Python to analyze, transform, or validate data.
  • Foundational understanding of relational data, data modeling, or dimensional modeling concepts.
  • Familiarity with common data-integration patterns involving databases, files, APIs, streams, or event data.
  • Understanding of software-development fundamentals such as source control, testing, debugging, code review, and deployment.
  • Ability to investigate technical and data-quality problems, evaluate available information, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, curiosity, and willingness to learn from feedback and pairing.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, product, analytics, operations, and business teams.

Qualified candidates must live within a daily commutable distance of Casey's Store Support Center in Ankeny, IA and be willing to work onsite 5 days per week.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, PySpark, Delta Lake, or Databricks Workflows.
  • Experience with GitHub or Azure DevOps, including branches, pull requests, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Exposure to Azure services such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, Microsoft Entra ID, or Azure Key Vault.
  • Understanding of data governance, metadata, lineage, data quality, or cataloging concepts.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimizing cloud data workloads.
  • Experience using AI-assisted software-development tools responsibly.
  • Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate certification or willingness to pursue it after joining.
