Original job description

OVERVIEW

The Durham Bulls are hiring a Creative Director to lead the look, feel, and voice of one of the most recognizable brands in Minor League Baseball. From the snorting bull at the DBAP to Wool E. Bull to the legacy of Bull Durham, few teams have a brand this rich. We want someone who will protect it, sharpen it, and keep it fresh for the next generation of fans. Even better, 2027 is the Bulls’ 125th anniversary, and you will shape how fans see and remember it. The Creative Director leads a small in-house team of two graphic designers and a video producer. You will be a hands-on leader who still makes work, not just approves it. You will also act as the hub for every creative request in the building, working with ticketing, partnerships, promotions, merchandise, community relations, events and food & beverage to make sure projects get prioritized, scheduled, and delivered on time. Working with senior leadership, you will help set the brand and visual direction for the club and make sure it shows up consistently everywhere fans see us: in the ballpark, on social, on the web, in email, on merchandise, and around the Triangle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

Brand and creative direction

  • Partner with senior leadership to define and evolve the Bulls' brand, visual identity, and messaging.
  • Own brand standards and make sure logos, colors, typography, and tone are used consistently across every touchpoint.
  • Lead creative for season campaigns, theme nights, promotions, in game content and special events from concept through delivery.
  • Stay hands-on: design, art direct, write concepts, and pitch in on shoots and edits when the team needs it.
  • Give clear, constructive feedback that raises the quality of everything that goes out the door.

Team leadership

  • Manage, coach, and develop a small team of graphic designers and a video producer.
  • Set clear expectations, priorities, and goals, and hold regular check-ins and reviews.
  • Build a positive, collaborative team culture that can handle the pace of a 75-game home schedule in addition to a full slate of special events.

Project management and creative traffic

  • Serve as the single point of intake for creative requests from every department.
  • Prioritize, schedule, and assign work so the team stays on deadline without burning out.
  • Build and maintain a simple, reliable request and approval process (forms, project board, timelines).
  • Push back or reset expectations when requests come in late or out of scope, and keep stakeholders informed.
  • Manage the creative budget, plus freelancers, printers, and outside vendors as needed.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with ticketing, corporate partnerships, promotions, merchandise, community relations, and game day operations.
  • Bring partner activations to life with creative that meets sponsor needs and still feels like the Bulls.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years of professional design or creative experience, including at least 2 years leading or supervising other creatives.
  • A strong portfolio showing brand, campaign, and social work across print, digital, and video.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; Premiere or After Effects a plus).
  • Proven project management skills: you can juggle many requests, set priorities, and hit deadlines.
  • Clear, confident communication with both creative teams and non-creative stakeholders.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays during the season, including home games and events.
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, marketing, communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Experience in sports, entertainment, live events, or hospitality.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana, Monday, or Trello.
  • Photography and Videography skills preferred.
  • Experience with in-venue video boards, motion graphics, or photography.
  • Strong concept and copywriting skills
  • A maker and a leader: you are just as comfortable in the design file as in the meeting.
  • Organized and calm under pressure, especially on a busy game day.
  • A low-ego collaborator who builds trust across departments and can say "not yet" diplomatically.
  • Passionate about baseball, the fan experience, and the Durham community.
  • Tuned in to design trends, social platforms, and what makes content connect.
  • Curious and coachable, and eager to help your team grow.
