Original job description

Established in 1873, Arts and Sciences is Boston University's largest and most academically diverse unit, encompassing over 8,400 undergraduates, 2,000 graduate students, 800 faculty members, and 300 staff across 50 departments, programs, centers, and institutes. Our faculty are award-winning researchers, innovative teachers, and dedicated mentors committed to exploring the complexities of our present and past, uncovering new perspectives, and crafting creative solutions to real-world problems. Our staff are dynamic, mission-driven professionals who foster community, inclusion, and belonging to advance every aspect of the college enterprise. Our community thrives on collaboration, bold ideas, and interdisciplinary exploration. Boston University's Arts & Sciences Writing Program seeks an administrative professional to join its staff. The Writing Program is a vital part of the undergraduate experience at BU, offering over 400 sections of introductory writing courses and enrolling students from every four-year undergraduate college. It employs over a hundred full-time and part-time instructors. The Senior Program Coordinator ensures the smooth operation of the Writing Program by serving as the first point of contact for students, faculty, and staff; coordinating outreach, marketing, and event planning; supporting the day-to-day operations of the Arts & Sciences Writing Center; and providing administrative support for other staff members, including updating program websites and collecting and compiling program records and data.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with social media intern and faculty committees to create and design social media content and other publicity.
  • Offering support for Writing Program faculty and staff in coordinating events, finding and reserving venues, placing catering orders, overseeing facilities requests.
  • Collecting, organizing, and maintaining program records, copy-editing program documents, compiling data, and other clerical tasks.
  • Managing online tutoring schedule, including tutor shifts and absences; making student appointments at the Writing Center; tracking missed appointments; creating usage reports for the Associate Director of the Writing Center.
  • Updating program websites, program calendars, and social media accounts; assisting with publishing student journal.
  • Assisting visitors, students, and instructors at the reception desk and via the writing@bu.edu email account; addressing minor problems with copier and printers.
  • The Writing Program seeks a candidate who is self-sufficient, highly organized, and detail-oriented, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A successful candidate will be able to prioritize multiple responsibilities, work independently as well as flexibly within a team of individuals who each have separate responsibilities, and interact comfortably with people across the BU community.

This is a full-time, in-person, 12-month position. The Writing Program is committed to building a diverse, interdisciplinary, compassionate community that values how people, projects, and ideas circulate across and beyond our program and the university. We respect the time and energy that all members of our community contribute to the Program's shared work. In all our interactions, we strive to recognize the whole person–inclusive of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, national origin, language background, and ability. We welcome candidates who support our commitment to ensuring BU is an inclusive, equitable, and diverse place where everyone can thrive. Join us in supporting the pursuit of knowledge that changes the world and provides boundless opportunities to inspire the next generation of leaders. We offer generous benefits, including health, dental, and life insurance, tuition remission, retirement savings, paid time off, and holiday leave.
