Original job description
Bonnell Aluminum, a division of Tredegar Corporation, is seeking a Reliability Engineer for our Carthage, TN manufacturing plant. In this role, you will improve equipment availability, operating stability, and lifecycle performance across the plant. You will own asset reliability strategy, equipment criticality rankings, multi-year reliability roadmaps, and fit-for-purpose maintenance strategies for critical and aging assets, and you will help identify obsolescence, single-point-of-failure, controls, utilities, and spare-parts risks. You will also support repair-versus-replace and life-cycle-cost decisions. About the Role You will work with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, and plant leadership to lead defect elimination, optimize preventive and predictive maintenance, strengthen reliability data, build plant capability, and build maintainability into equipment designs and commissioning. You will turn equipment history, production losses, maintenance performance, and process data into prioritized improvement work that reduces repeat failures and supports safety, quality, throughput, and operating stability. This role focuses on long-term asset reliability, defect elimination, maintenance strategy, and technical risk reduction. Maintenance supervision and planning remain responsible for daily work execution, scheduling, and workforce coordination. What You'll Do
- Asset Reliability Strategy: Develop equipment criticality rankings and asset-management strategies, and define the right run-to-failure, preventive, predictive, condition-based, or redesign approach based on criticality, failure modes, operating context, and business risk. Maintain a multi-year reliability roadmap for critical and aging assets. Partner with Maintenance and Supply Chain to improve equipment bills of materials, critical-spare lists, and CMMS spare-parts information. Support repair-versus-replace and life-cycle-cost decisions by quantifying their effects on safety, quality, throughput, capacity, and cost.
- Defect Elimination & Problem Solving: Lead structured root-cause analyses for significant, repeat, chronic, and high-risk failures. Make sure corrective actions address physical, human, and systemic causes, verify completion, and confirm that failures do not recur. Facilitate cross-functional defect-elimination teams.
- Maintenance-Strategy Optimization: Improve preventive and predictive maintenance tasks, and eliminate ineffective or duplicative work. Establish condition-monitoring routes, including vibration, thermography, ultrasound, oil analysis, motor testing, electrical inspection, and process-condition monitoring. Advance precision-maintenance practices, and develop repeatable job plans and troubleshooting guides with technicians and planners.
- Reliability Data & Performance Management: Build trustworthy failure coding, downtime data, asset hierarchy, maintenance history, and critical-spares information. Use CMMS, downtime, historian, control-system, and process data to identify failure patterns, bad actors, and early-warning indicators. Turn the analysis into prioritized recommendations, and work with plant leadership to define a limited set of actionable reliability measures.
- Capability Building & Project Assurance: Coach operators, technicians, supervisors, planners, and engineers in reliability practices. Strengthen operator basic care and early detection of abnormal conditions. Build maintainability, accessibility, standardization, and spare-parts considerations into new-equipment designs, and take part in commissioning and equipment acceptance. Capture knowledge from experienced employees and develop standard troubleshooting methods for legacy and modern equipment.
Tools & Methods You'll Use
- Equipment criticality analysis, reliability-centered maintenance, failure mode and effects analysis, obsolescence and single-point-of-failure analysis, and life-cycle costing.
- Structured root-cause analysis, failure reporting, analysis, and corrective-action systems, bad-actor management, and recurrence verification.
- Preventive-maintenance optimization, vibration, thermography, ultrasound, oil analysis, motor testing, electrical inspection, and precision maintenance.
- Computerized maintenance management or enterprise asset management systems, with Excel, Power BI, Teams, Project, PowerPoint, and Copilot.
What You'll Bring Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of advanced technical training, reliability credentials, and progressive industrial reliability experience, subject to company job requirements.
- Minimum 5 years of engineering, reliability, maintenance, controls, or equipment-improvement experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing equipment failures and leading corrective actions that produce sustained results.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic systems and industrial electrical or controls systems, with strong electromechanical troubleshooting capability.
- Experience improving preventive maintenance and applying predictive or condition-monitoring technologies.
- Experience using a computerized maintenance management system, equipment history, and operational data to prioritize work and measure results.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and control-system drawings and documentation.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and communicate technical issues clearly to operators, technicians, engineers, and leaders.
- Commitment to safe work, risk reduction, environmental compliance, and disciplined management of change.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP), Certified Reliability Leader (CRL), or an equivalent reliability credential.
- Vibration, lubrication, thermography, ultrasound, or similar condition-monitoring certification
- Professional Engineer license or advanced technical degree.
- Experience with aluminum extrusion, metals processing, finishing, anodizing, paint systems, machining, or fabrication.
- Experience with reliability-centered maintenance, failure mode and effects analysis, failure reporting, analysis, and corrective-action systems, criticality analysis, life-cycle costing, precision maintenance, or condition monitoring.
- Experience improving a CMMS or enterprise asset management system's asset hierarchy and failure-coding structure.
- Reliability support experience with hydraulic presses, furnaces, ovens, saws, conveyors, pumps, fans, motors, drives, controls, utilities, and automated production systems.
- Experience building maintainability and spare-parts requirements into equipment design, commissioning, and acceptance.
Key Competencies Safety Leadership, Systems Thinking, Technical Problem Solving, Reliability Analysis, Execution Discipline, Data-Based Decisions, Cross-Functional Collaboration, Clear Communication, Continuous Improvement, Planning & Prioritization, Learning Agility, and Results Orientation. What Success Looks Like
- Asset strategy and risk reduction: Current criticality rankings, fit-for-purpose asset strategies, and a prioritized multi-year roadmap that addresses aging assets, obsolescence, single-point failures, controls, utilities, and spare-parts risks, supported by sound repair-versus-replace and life-cycle-cost recommendations.
- Defect elimination and equipment performance: Fewer repeat, chronic, significant, and high-risk failures, timely root-cause analyses with completed corrective actions, verified prevention of recurrence, less unplanned and emergency work, and better critical-asset availability.
- Maintenance effectiveness: Better preventive and predictive task quality, appropriate condition-monitoring coverage, stronger precision-maintenance practices, repeatable job plans and troubleshooting guides, and more planned and condition-based work relative to reactive maintenance.
- Data, capability, and project assurance: Trustworthy asset hierarchy, failure coding, downtime data, maintenance history, equipment bills of materials, and critical-spares information, along with a limited set of plant reliability measures, stronger reliability skills across plant roles, and maintainability and equipment-acceptance criteria built into projects and commissioning.
